Creating a file type

You might want to create your own specific file type, for example to handle XML files created by other applications. The new file type can be an XML or a text file type.

Procedure

  1. Access the appropriate dialog box. For more information, see topic Finding the Right File Type Settings.
  2. Select File Types from the navigation tree on the left.
  3. Click New. The Select Type dialog box is displayed.
  4. Choose the category of file type. The Create File Type wizard is displayed.

To create a simple delimited text or a regular expression delimited text file type

About this task

Complete the File type information page:
  • File type name - Mandatory. Enter a user-friendly name for the file type. This is the name that will appear in the navigation tree.
  • File type icon - Optional. This appears alongside the file name. Click Browse to select an icon. Existing file types use icons from the installation assembly. You cannot browse for these icons.
  • File type identifier - Mandatory. Must be unique within this set of file types.
  • Name of individual document - This appears in the Save as dialog box that is displayed when you close the file.
  • Name of document category- This is displayed in the drop-down list associated with the File open dialog box that is displayed when you open the file.
  • File dialog wildcard expression - Specify a wildcard name expression for this file type. When you open the file during translation, the Open Document dialog box displays this expression in a drop-down list.

To create an XML file type

Procedure

  1. Complete the File type information type:
    • File type name - Mandatory. Enter a user-friendly name for the file type. This is the name that will appear in the navigation tree.

  2. Complete the XML Settings Import page. For more information on importing parser rules, see the topic About Importing Parser Rules.
  3. Complete the Parser Rules page. SDL Trados Studio uses the parser rules to separate translatable from non-translatable text. For more information on defining parser rules, see the topic About XML Parser Rules with Examples.
  4. Complete the File Detection page. For more information on detection settings, see the topic Detection Settings - Identify XML File Type by Content.

To create an HTML file type

Procedure

  1. Complete the File type information page:
    • File type name - Mandatory. Enter a user-friendly name for the file type. This is the name that will appear in the navigation tree.
    • File type icon - Optional. This appears alongside the file name. Click Browse to select an icon. Existing file types use icons from the installation assembly. You cannot browse for these icons.

    • Name of document category - This is displayed in the drop-down list associated with the File open dialog box that is displayed when you open the file.

  2. Complete the HTML Elements Import page. Select whether you want to base your new HTML file type on the predefined HTML 4 or HTML 5 configuration, or use an existing SGML, HTML, XML, XSD or INI file to define the HTML elements of the new file type.
  3. Complete the Parser settings, File Detection, Entities settings, Writer settings, Whitespace Settings pages.

Results

Studio creates the new file type and places it near the top of the list of file types.
