Using wildcards character in termbase searches

Wildcards (*) are used as placeholders for unspecified characters in the search text. SDL Trados Studio locates all terms in the SDL MultiTerm termbase that match the search text. For example, the search text *berry could be matched with the terms strawberry and blackberry. You can put wildcards anywhere in the search text, and you can use them more than once in the same search. There are two types of wildcards you can use:

The asterisk (*) can be used to represent an unspecified number (including zero) of characters. You can insert the asterisk anywhere in a string of characters.

This search method is useful if you do not know exactly what you are looking for, or if you do not want to type in a long search text.

A question mark (?) represents a single character. You can insert the question mark anywhere in a string of characters.

Examples

  • The search value *info* finds all source language terms that contain the text info anywhere in the term.
  • The search value c*m* finds: camera, cement, computer, computer desk and cumin.
  • The search value c?p finds: cap, cop and cup but not capital, copper or cupola.
