Creating a Category

Before you begin

  • To create a Category, you must have Category Management rights.
  • To modify the security settings for this Category, you must have Permission Management rights.

About this task

A Category is a general classification in which a list of Keywords can be created. The following items can use Categories and Keywords:

  • Schema list fields, where a Category determines the Keywords that can be selected from a list field in a Component
  • Component as list values, where a Schema uses a Category to define a list field's values
  • Component Templates, where a Category is used as trackable metadata
  • Tracking Keys in a Target Group, where a Keyword corresponds to a Tracking Key

Procedure

  1. Expand the Publication in which you want to create a Category and open the Categories and Keywords node.
  2. Select the Categories and Keywords node and do one of the following:
    • choose New > Category from the context menu
    • click the New Category button on the Create tab of the Ribbon toolbar.

  3. On the General tab, fill in the following fields:
    Name
    Enter the name of the Category as used in lists in the Content Manager.
    XML Name
    Enter the XML name of the Category. You cannot change this value once you have created the Category.
    The can only contain letters without accents (A-Z, a-z), digits (0-9), underscores “_” and/or hyphens “-”. The first character must be a letter or an underscore character.
    Description
    Describe the Category.
    Publishable
    Select the option if you want the Category to be publishable. If you deselect the option after the item has been published, you are prompted to unpublish the item.
    Use for identification
    Select the option if you want to uniquely identify Component Presentations on the published Web site.
    If you develop a Keyword-based navigation, selecting Use for identification ensures that no two Components tagged with the same Keyword have the same name. Component Presentations based on these Components will be uniquely identifiable using a combination of the Component Title and Keyword on the Presentation Server.
    Default Metadata Schema
    Apply a default Metadata Schema to all Keywords (optional).
  4. Click Save and Close.

Results

A Category is created. Keywords can now be created within this Category.
