Creating a Compound Template

Before you begin

To create a Compound Template you must have Template Management rights as well as write permissions for the Folder in which you intend to create the Compound Template.

Procedure

  1. Do one of the following:
    • If Template Builder is not yet running, start Template Builder by selecting Start from the Windows menu and selecting SDL Tridion > Template Builder from All Programs or Programs.
    • If Template Builder is running, close any open Compound Template (save changes if needed).

    Do one of the following:

    • Click New Compound Template.
    • Select File > New from the main menu.
    • Click the New button. Press Ctrl+N.

The New Compound Template dialog opens.

  2. Now, select the location, name and type of your Compound Template:
    • Under Content Manager, specify the Content Manager in which you want to create this Compound Template by selecting or typing the URL of the Content Manager Explorer Web site. Click Go to see the list of Publications in this Content Manager (Template Builder may prompt you for a user name and password at this point).
    • Select a Publication and navigate to a Folder in that Publication in which you intend to create the Compound Template. Select that Folder.
    • Under Name enter a name for your Compound Template.
    • Under Type select the type of Compound Template you intend to create:

      Page Template
Transforms an SDL Tridion Page item into a publishable Web page.
      Component Template
Transforms an SDL Tridion Component item into a part of a publishable Web page.
      Template Building Block

Click OK to commit your settings.

Results

You create a Compound Template with the following properties:

Blueprint:
If the Publication in which you created the Compound Template is a Blueprint parent Publication, the Compound Template is shared to all child Publications.
Version:
The version of the Compound Template is set to 1.0
Workflow:
If a Workflow Process is associated with the type of Compound Template you selected, the Compound Template enters Workflow and is assigned to the user that created it. That user can work on the Compound Template, and Finish Activity on it, causing it to enter the next step in the Workflow Process.
