Restructuring Keywords

Before you begin

  • To move or delete a Keyword, you must have Category Management rights and Delete permissions for the Category.
  • To cut and paste a Keyword, you must have Category Management rights and Write for the Category.

About this task

You can restructure your taxonomy tree by moving, deleting, and copying and pasting Keywords. The following rules apply when reorganizing your taxonomy:

  • Copy and Paste:
    • When you copy a Keyword, you create a copy of all items (Keyword branch) that are contained within it as well.
  • Cut and Paste (moving):
    • You cannot cut & paste a Keyword that is a local copy or a shared item (the Keyword must be a local item—an item created in the context Publication)
  • Delete:
    • You cannot delete a Keyword that is used in a Component field or Metadata field
    • You cannot delete a Keyword that is a local copy or a shared item (the Keyword must be a local item—an item created in the context Publication)

Procedure

  1. In the Content Management view, expand the Publication in which you want to reorganize Keywords and open the Categories and Keywords node.
  2. Select a Keyword and choose one of the following options from the context menu:
    • Cut—see step 3
    • Copy—see step 3
    • Delete—in the dialog that appears:
      • Click Keyword to delete just the selected Keyword (the child Keywords will be moved up one level in the taxonomy tree structure)
      • Click Branch to delete the selected Keyword and all its child Keywords
  3. After you have cut or copied a Keyword, select a Keyword or Category and choose Paste from the context menu.

Results

The Keyword or Keyword branch is moved, copied, or deleted.

  • If you just delete the Keyword, the child Keywords are moved up one level in the taxonomy tree structure.
  • If you copied a Keyword, the item is renamed with the prefix "Copy of ... because the title of a Keyword must be unique within the Category. If the Keyword has a Key, the Key value is not copied as the value must also be unique within the Category.
