Using server-based TMs in projects

Using server-based TMs means adding existing TMs to your projects or creating TMs from scratch. You can use TMs during pre-translation and during translation, in local projects or in shared projects (via Trados GroupShare).

Procedure

  1. Decide whether you want to use server-based TMs:
    • For all future projects - Go to File > Options > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation.
    • For the current project - Go to the Projects view, and select the project. On the Home tab, select Project Settings, and then go to Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation.
  2. Select Use > Server-based Translation Memory, and go through the pages of the New Translation Memory wizard:
    1. Perform an action:
      • Select a server from the Server list.
      • If the server of your choice is not in the list, select the Servers... button and, in the Servers dialog, select Add. Enter the server address and provide the GroupShare authentication credentials.
    2. Select the TM from the list.
    3. Select OK.
  3. To create a TM to use with this project, select Create... > Create Server-Based Translation Memory, and go through the pages of the New Server-based Translation Memory wizard.
    1. On the General page, specify the TM: name, description, location, server and container. If you want to base the TM you are currently creating on an existing TM, select the Browse button near the Create From box.
    2. Select Next.
    3. On the Language Pairs page, specify the source and target languages.
    4. Select Next.
    5. On the Fields and Settings page:
      1. Under Fields, select Add, and then configure the available field columns: Name, Type, Picklist and Allow Multiple Values. If you base your current TM on an existing TM, this page is automatically populated with the fields of this latter TM, but you can edit the fields.
      2. Under Recognize, select the checkboxes corresponding to the elements you want Trados Studio to identify as chunks instead of text.
      3. Under Count as one if words, select the checkboxes corresponding to the elements you want Trados Studio to treat as one word.
    6. Select Next.
    7. On the Language Resources page:
      1. Select a language resource template, if available. A language resource template includes the lists your predefine for: variables, abbreviations, ordinal followers or segmentation rules.
      2. Select one of the resource types (Variable List, Abbreviation List, Ordinal Followers List and Segmentation Rules) and then select Edit to add or modify the values in the list.
    8. Select Finish to save your changes.
  4. Select OK to save your changes.
