Checking out objects from the repository

To modify objects, you must first check them out of the repository. Checking out an object provides you with write access to the object.

Before you begin

  • You must have permission to edit and store objects in the Content Manager repository.
  • To modify objects, you must first check them out of the repository. You cannot modify objects with a status of Released. To update a released object, you must to create a new version or new branch.

Procedure

When working in your XML authoring tool, select Tridion Docs > Check out....

This action allows you to use the Browse Repository window to check out objects from the repository. If the object you want to check out is opened in the authoring tool, but opened as read only, you are first asked if you want to check out the current object.

Results

  • You cannot modify objects with a status of Released. If you select an object with a released status, the application prompts you to create a new version or new branch.
  • If you check out an object that is in your local storage (same version and language), you are prompted to either open the object from the local storage or overwrite the object in local storage. If you choose the latter option, the object is downloaded from the repository and overwrites the file in your local storage.
  • When you check out an object, an edit lock is placed on the object in the repository.
