Working with references in the editor
You can insert references to modules and graphics, validate references, rebuild the table of references, and find and delete internal references in the editor.
Before you begin
Before you can work with references in the XML editor, you must have a connection to Contenta. In most cases, this connection is established when the editor is first launched. To determine whether you are connected to Contenta, see Connecting to Contenta from the XML editor.
- Allowed reference types for module types
The Contenta S1000D Insert Reference interface shows only reference types that are allowed to be inserted into the type of module that you are editing. - Inserting a reference to a data module

This topic describes how Validate works when used in the XML editor. One important difference between Validate in Contenta and Validate in the editor is that Validate in the editor also validates internal references. - Validating References and BREX in the XML editor
This task describes how to run Validate from within the Arbortext or Oxygen XML editor. - Inserting internal references in the editor
You can use the Manage Internal References tool in Arbortex Editor or Oxygen XML Author to create an internal reference in a DM to elements within the DM. The tool includes all the required markup for the internal reference based on the applicable S1000D issue and assigns a unique ID to the target element if one does not already exist. - Creating hotspot links in the editor
You can use the Contenta Hotspot Manager tool in Arbortext Editor or Oxygen XML Author to create hotspot links in a CGM or SVG graphic to text elements within the DM. The tool includes all the required markup for the internal reference based on the applicable S1000D issue and streamlines the process for creating a graphics legend. - Finding and deleting internal references in the XML editor
Perform these steps to locate and delete internal references using the Arbortext or Oxygen XML editor. - Copying an object's reference information
Using the S1000D Clip Reference tool to copy an object's reference information and then pasting it into another document helps ensure that the reference is accurate.
