Translating PDF files

Understand how Language Weaver Edge manages the conversion of PDF files.

PDF is a complex file type that in some cases may be challenging to process. While our default built-in PDF library handles well most of PDF files, scanned PDFs or PDFs with a non-standard encoding may require special attention. To address this challenge, we have partnered with ABBYY and have built into Language Weaver Edge the ABBYY Enhanced feature, which improves the document extraction. This is a paid feature that can be easily added to your current subscription.

These are the PDF conversion options available in your installation if the ABBYY Enhanced feature is added to your account:
  • Smart Selection chooses the most appropriate PDF conversion library for the PDF file you have uploaded for translation. It will use ABBYY Enhanced for scanned documents and documents in languages using a non-Latin script, and Standard for all other PDFs.
  • Standard uses the standard PDF conversion library. This option is more suitable for searchable PDF files with Latin script languages (most Western European languages like English, German, French, Spanish, and so on).
  • ABBYY Enhanced uses the ABBYY OCR library to pre-process any PDF uploaded for translation.

Once the translation has completed, you will see in the UI the processing method used for each PDF file (either Standard or ABBYY).
