Exploring the user interface

The LiveContent S1000D user interface lets you navigate an S1000D Interactive Electronic Technical Publication (IETP).

Look and feel

LiveContent S1000D conforms to the look-and-feel of other RWS products, which are based on common attributes such as colors, typeface, and layout—called the Carbon theme. You can configure LiveContent S1000D to optimize the display for the user's device, either a desktop monitor or tablet.

The default LiveContent S1000D user interface consists of a table of contents (TOC) panel on the left and the content (graphics and text) content panels on the right. Above them, a navigation panel and top bar banner provide access to additional controls. The panels and banner (and their controls) are described in the following sections

TOC panel

The Title/DM Code (ABC/123) and Sync TOC icons appear above the Table of Contents panel. Sections, List of Illustrations and List of Tables appear within a Chapter in the Table of Contents panel.

The The Sync TOC icon lets you synchronize content that has changed in the main content area of your publication with the Table of Contents panel. The Title/DMCode (ABC/123) icon lets you toggle between the S1000D-specification's techname/infoname view and SNS view of the TOC.

In the TOC, LiveContent S1000D displays a unique icon for each document type in the publication. The administrator can customize these icons.

Top bar banner

The top bar banner is at the top of the LiveContent S1000D display.

The top bar banner contains controls for executing various operations in LiveContent S1000D. Depending on your configuration, you may not have access to all of these controls and some of them are not available on tablet display.
  • Auxiliary Navigation Menu displays the Auxiliary navigation menu in the left panel.
  • Home resets the display to the initial view of the publication.
  • Toggle Left Panel lets you reclaim more viewing area on the canvas by hiding the left panel.
  • Display Graphics displays the graphics in the publication.
  • Document Only displays the publication without graphics.
  • Graphic Only shows the currently displayed graphic in a new "tear-off" window.
  • Print generates a PDF of the current module. Not available in the tablet interface.
  • Reorient Text and Graphics toggles the between showing the graphics panel above or to the left of the text panels. Not available in the tablet interface, which orients text and graphics automatically for portrait or landscape view when the tablet is rotated.
  • Large Table Controls provides access to controls for searching within very large tables, and is displayed only if the current module contains a large table.
  • Search displays the LiveContent S1000D search panel.
  • Information in the desktop interface, provides access to LiveContent S1000D reports, markup, release notes, user guide, and version information; in the tablet interface, provides access only to the user guide.
  • Settings displays a menu of tools allowing you to toggle highlighting of changes or exit the publication. In the desktop interface only, the menu provides additional tools to save your position in the publication and manage users.

Navigation panel

The navigation panel, located above the main content area (and below the top bar banner) contains buttons you can use to execute various operations.

The Navigation panel contains the following controls.
  • Back displays the previous page in the viewing history.
  • Forward displays the next page in the viewing history.
  • Bookmarks displays the Bookmarks panel, allowing you to add, edit, delete and go to bookmarks in the publication.
  • Preliminary Requirements displays the Preliminary Requirements panel.
  • Notes displays the Notes panel, allowing you to add, edit, delete and go to notes in the publication.
  • Emergency Procedures opens the Emergency Procedures window, displaying all the emergency procedure modules in the open publication.
  • Prev Step moves the display to the previous step in a troubleshooting process.
  • Next Step moves the display to the next step in a troubleshooting process.
  • Previous moves the display to the previous step in a procedure. If enabled, Common Information, Preliminary Required Conditions, Safety Conditions, and Closing Conditions are included.
  • Next moves the display to the next step in a procedure. If enabled, Common Information, Preliminary Required Conditions, Safety Conditions, and Closing Conditions are included.

Auxiliary navigation menu

Clicking the hamburger icon () in the upper left corner of the screen launches an auxiliary navigation menu in the left panel.

By default, the Auxiliary navigation menu contains the following controls.
  • History displays the list of the data modules visited in the current session.
  • Applicability opens the Select Applicability window.
  • Suspend and Resume displays the Suspend and Resume panel, allowing you to suspend a session or resume a saved session.
  • Attachments displays the Attachments panel, allowing you to add, edit, delete, and view or download attachments to DMs in the publication. Not available in the tablet interface.

When you are finished using the auxiliary navigation menu, click the hamburger icon again to dismiss it. The TOC is then displayed in the left panel.

Graphics control bar

When viewing a module containing one or more illustrations, controls are displayed below the image viewing area as in this example of the default graphics control bar for an SVG or SVGZ graphic.

The controls that appear on the graphics control bar vary depending on your configuration, the type of graphic, and the actions you can perform on the graphic. The graphics control bar can contain the following controls.
