Working with MultiTerm Desktop
MultiTerm is a termbase management application that helps you to create, manage and present your terminology. Browse through the topics of this chapter to learn about using MultiTerm and its default components: MultiTerm Widget, MultiTerm Convert.
Supported languages
MultiTerm is fully Unicode-compliant and, therefore, supports a wide range of languages, including bidirectional and double-byte character set (DBCS) languages such as Japanese, Chinese and Korean. To display non-Western languages successfully, you must have support for the relevant language installed on your computer.
MultiTerm supports the use of an unlimited number of languages per termbase and mixed language content in termbase fields.
ASCII is the standard code used for information interchange between systems and has 128 characters. File names in ASCII can use all upper and lowercase letters and numbers. However, they should not contain punctuation marks or other symbols such as \ / : * ' ; " < > | or accented characters.
Scalability
MultiTerm is a scalable solution which can be used in single or multi-user setups. Single users can install local termbases onto their computer using the MultiTerm client. In a multi-user setup, termbases are stored on a central database server in the network environment.
Termbases
MultiTerm is a concept-oriented system. Each entry in a termbase corresponds to a single concept. This means that an entry contains all of the terms that describe the concept: multiple language versions of terms and any additional information associated with that concept, for example, a definition.
Each termbase in MultiTerm can store an unlimited number of entries.
You design exactly the termbase you want:
- You decide which languages may be used in the termbase.
- You can specify terms in any number of languages, and the termbase can be searched in any language direction.
- You to exchange information easily with other applications and other MultiTerm users via the import/export functionalities.
- You can add cross-references to other termbase entries and Internet links to termbase entries.
- You can attach graphics and other multimedia files to termbase entries.
- You can use a series of wizards to create, use and modify termbases.
Access to information
Terminology data in MultiTerm is based on a common XML-based format, which enables the quick and easy exchange of data between users.
You decide what information may be stored for each concept.
Powerful search functions help you to quickly locate information in the termbase, and includes fuzzy search, which will find even transposed or misspelled terms.
Filters allow you to dictate exactly what information you want to search for, import or export.
MultiTerm Convert allows you to convert terminology data to MultiTerm XML format quickly and easily.
