Multimedia file migration

MultiTerm Desktop supports migrating multimedia files that were previously associated with entries in a MultiTerm 5 or MultiTerm 2007 termbase. Use MultiTerm Convert and the import feature in MultiTerm to migrate multimedia files.

Supported formats

  • MultiTerm Convert 5 supports the following multimedia formats: *.bmp, *.wmf, *.pcx, *.tif, *.ps, *.dxf, *.png, *.eps, *.fpx, .*jpg, *.img, *.pcd, *.wpg, *.tga, .*gif.
  • MultiTerm Convert 2007 supports those multimedia file formats that are supported within DHTML. This includes simple graphic formats such as *.bmp, .*jpg, *.gif, *.ico, *.wmf, *.png and *.wmf, and more complex formats such as MP3 sound files and AVI videos.

Migration process

MultiTerm facilitates migrating multimedia files as follows:

  1. During conversion, MultiTerm Convert creates a subfolder for storing the multimedia files. This is created within the same folder as the MTF.XML terminology data file. The subfolder is called media_filename, where the file name is the name of the exported MTF.XML file, without the .XML. For example, if your file is called TestConversion.mtf.xml, the folder will be called TestConversion.mtf. Note that you can also add multimedia files for other formats if you manually create the folder and add the files to it before importing the data.
  2. After conversion, you must convert all multimedia files that you find in this folder to a format that is supported by MultiTerm Desktop. See the table below.
File ExtensionDescription
*.bmp

BMP files store data about a graphic image in a pattern of memory bits, where each bit specifies the color of a pixel of the stored image.

.*gif

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a graphics format widely used for images on the World Wide Web.

.*jpg

JPG or JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a graphics format widely used for images on the World Wide Web.

*.png

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a graphics format widely used for images on the World Wide Web.

*.wmf

WMF (Windows Metafile) files contain a sequence of commands that results in displaying a graphic image.

Import process

MultiTerm facilitates the import of multimedia files as follows:

  1. During the import process, the Import Wizard finds any multimedia files that are stored in the appropriate sub-folder and imports them in the same way as it imports data from the relevant MTF.XML import file.
  2. After the import, MultiTerm displays multimedia files in the relevant entries. Multimedia fields may be defined as collapsed or expanded in the current layout. When the field is collapsed, the field label is underlined and you must click on the label to display the corresponding multimedia file. When the field is expanded, the multimedia file is displayed directly.
