Searching multiple termbases

If you have multiple termbases open, MultiTerm will automatically search all of them.

About this task

  • You can use the normal, full text fuzzy wildcard search methods.
  • You cannot perform an entry number, duplicate term or ad-hoc entry search as these can only be performed on the default termbase.
  • You can apply Filters to the termbases being searched, however you have to make a separate filter selection for each termbase.
  • You have to specify the order in which the termbases are searched.

You cannot search a mixture of source languages. The language that is currently selected in the Display toolbar is the language that will be searched for all termbases in the search.

Procedure

  1. Go to File > Open Termbase from the Ribbon.
    • Server termbases: Select Servers to set up the available servers, and Login to connect to a specific server. Select for each termbase you want to open, and select OK.
    • Local termbases: Select Browse to open a *.sdltb file. Select for each termbase you want to open, and select OK.
  2. In the Terms view, select the Termbases tab.
  3. When you are searching multiple termbases, you have to specify the order in which the termbases are searched.
    Search optionDescription
    Hierarchical

The termbases are searched one at a time in the order they appear in the Termbases tab, beginning with the default termbase.

If any results are found in the default termbase, the results are displayed, and the other termbases are not searched.

If no results are found, the search moves to the next termbase in the list. The search will not move to the next termbase until all available results from the current termbase have been displayed.

    Parallel

All termbases are searched at the same time and a single list of search results is created. The terms in the list are sorted into alphabetical order and displayed in the Hitlist tab.

    Sequential

The termbases are searched one at a time in the order they are in the Termbases tab, beginning with the default termbase. Results from a sequential search are displayed for each termbase in order. Terms are sorted alphabetically:

    Termbase 1

    Terms A-Z

    Termbase 2

    Terms A-Z

In a sequential search, the Hitlist tab can contain search results from multiple termbases at the same time.

  4. If you do not want a termbase to be searched, you can disable the termbase for searching. Right-click the termbase to be disabled for searching and select Disable for searching from the shortcut menu. The termbase name changes color from black to gray.
