Checking out a document for editing

This topic describes how to check out a document or graphic for editing.

Before you begin

Before you can check out a document for editing, you must complete the following tasks:
  • Specify a checkout directory
  • Configure Contenta Web to use applets
  • Download the appropriate Editor Extensions for your authoring tool
The above tasks need to be performed on initial setup; you do not have to perform these tasks on subsequent check outs.

About this task

Use the check out tool that is appropriate for your editor to export an object's data for modifications and to place a long term lock on the object in the database. You can maintain a lock on a long-term basis and modify the data outside the database. The lock ensures that no one else can edit the data while you are editing it outside the database.

Procedure

  1. In the list view, right-click the document or graphic that you want to check out, click more, and then click one of the following options:
    • Arbortext Check Out
    • FrameMaker Check Out
    • XMetaL Check Out
    • Content Check Out
  2. When prompted, specify the location in which to save the document.
  3. Click the check out tool that is appropriate for your editor. Contenta Web exports the object to your check out directory where you can open it, modify it, and then save it. If you clicked Arbortext Check Out, the editor launches automatically.

What to do next

Use the appropriate check in tool to import the modified document and remove the lock.
