Applicability is the method by which you can tag content that is only appropriate in specific situations such as content that is targeted for a specific audience or for a specific product.
You can set applicability for:
- the whole DM
- specific information within the DM; also referred to as
referenced applicability and (in Issue 3.0) inline applicability.
| S1000D Issue | Applicability tags |
|---|
| Issue 3.0 | In the DM, in the <idstatus> section:
- For DM applicability:
<applic>
- For inline (or referenced) applicability:
<inlineapplics>/<applic>
|
| Issue 4.0 | In the DM, in the <identAndStatusSection> section:
- For DM applicability:
<applic>
- For referenced applicability:
<referencedApplicGroup>/<applic>
|
| Issue 4.1 or higher |
In the DM:
- For DM applicability, in the
<identAndStatusSection>section: <applic> or <applicRef>
- For referenced applicability, in the
<content> section: <referencedApplicGroup>/<applic> or <referencedApplicGroupRef>/<applicRef>
Note: The tags are optional but, if present, they are mutually exclusive. That is, A DM may contain:
- either an
<applic> tag or an <applicRef> tag in the <identAndStatusSection> but not both.
- either a
<referencedApplicGroup> tag or a <referencedApplicGroupRef> tag in the <content> section but not both.
Note:
<applicRef> and <referencedApplicGroupRef> tags are used in conjunction with applicability CIR DMs.
- Only explicit references to CIR DMs are supported. That is, each
<applicRef> tag must contain child <dmRef> <dmRefIdent> and <dmCode> tags, where the <dmCode> references an applicability CIR DM.
- References to applicability CIR DMs may optionally include language and country markup in the
<dmRef> tag (<refdm> tag in Issue 3.0). In multi-language CSDBs, if this optional markup is not present, the Applicability tools look for the referenced CIR applicability DM in the same language as the referencing module, that is, the DM being edited.

For showing or hiding content within the DM, use Applicability Manager to create, modify, or remove Referenced Applicability. By declaring product attributes (in the ACT) and product conditions (in the CCT), you can apply simple assertions or you can evaluate and apply grouped assertions for each product instance (in the PCT). Additionally, you can build applicability expressions by reusing applicability defined in other DMs that share the same ACT.
Note: References to applicability DMs (ACT/PCT/CCT DMs) may optionally include language and country markup in the <dmRef> tag (<refdm> tag in Issue 3.0). In multi-language CSDBs, if this optional markup is not present, the Applicability tools look for the referenced ACT DM in the same language as the referencing module, that is, the DM being edited, and for the referenced PCT/CCT DMs in the same language as the referencing ACT DM.
From the Contenta menu in Arbortext Editor, choose from the following tools when working with applicability.
The Manage Applicability tool is accessed using the Contenta dropdown menu in Arbortext Editor and allows users to build, add, modify, or delete applicability annotations (expressions, statements).
Note: For Issue 4.1 and higher:
- Assign Applicability to assign the applicability to data within the DM.
Both the Modify button and the New button are disabled if the DM being edited contains CIR applicability references. These buttons are disabled in the Assign Applicability tool only.
- Preview to filter and view the document based on the applicability assigned to inline content.
Note: The SDL Contenta S1000D Editor Plug-In applicability menu items Manage Applicability and Assign Applicability support applicability markup in Issues 3.0 and higher only.
