Checking out objects

Checking out an object provides you with write access to the object. You check out an object from the repository and modify it in your authoring tool.

Before you begin

  • You must have permission to edit and store objects in the Content Manager repository.

Procedure

Perform one of the following actions:
ApplicationAction
Publication Manager
  1. Select the object in the repository that you want to check out.

By default, the latest version is selected. To check out a previous version, click in the box next to the version (upper right pane) to check out.

  2. Right click on the object (in the right or left pane).
  3. Click Check Out.
XML authoring tool
  1. Click SDL Knowledge Center > Check Out.
  2. Select either the Repository, Search, or Inbox tab.
  3. Locate and select the object to check out.
  4. By default, the latest version of the object is selected. To check out a previous version of the object, click Versions... (lower right pane) then select the version you want to check out.

    Click OK.

What to do next

  • You cannot modify objects with a status of Released. If you select an object with a released status, the application prompts you to create a new version or new branch. Click in the appropriate radio button (version or branch) to continue.
  • If you check out an object that is in your local storage (same version and language), you are prompted to either open the object from the local storage or overwrite the object in local storage. If you choose the latter option, the object is downloaded from the repository and overwrites the file in your local storage.
  • When you check out an object, an edit lock is placed on the object in the repository.
  • If using the web authoring tool, refer to the information specific for authoring content using the web client.
