Performing an advanced search

Advanced search lets you search multiple terms in your publication using Boolean conditions (And, Or, And Not, Near), whole words, or word fragments. You can also restrict the search to a specific node in the TOC.

Procedure

  1. On the right side of the top bar panel, click the magnifying glass search icon to open the search panel.
  2. In the Search panel, select the Advanced Search radio button.

  3. Enter search terms in the Find text boxes, and select an operator from the drop down.

    To...

    • search for two terms, both of which must occur, enter both terms, one on each side of the Find field, and then click And from the drop-down list.
    • search for two terms, at least one of which must occur, enter both terms, one on each side of the Find field, and then click Or from the drop-down list.
    • search for two terms, both of which must occur, and which must have no more than a set number of words (typically 12) between them, enter both terms, one on each side of the Find field, and then click Near from the drop-down list.
    • search for one term that must occur while at the same time another must not, enter both terms, one on each side of the the Find field, and then click And Not from the drop-down list.
    • search whole words only, click Whole words only.
    • search in a specific branch of the table of contents only, click a folder or a document in that branch, and then click Filter on TOC selection.
  4. To execute the search, click the magnifying glass button in the search panel.

Results

Search results are listed on the Search Results tab below the search controls in the search panel, and include the number of hits that match the search parameters that you specified. When you display the TOC in the search panel, the number of search matches display for each section (if this feature is enabled). You can save the search results by clicking Save this Search. You can also click Load a Saved Search to see a list of saved searches, which you can then load and execute. You can display the publication's TOC using the Table of Contents button in the search panel and then redisplay the search results using the Search Results button.
