Processing Units and Dynamic Licensing

Processing Units (PUs) are the elements which influence the translation performance of SDL ETS Language Pairs (LPs). PUs can now be allocated to Language Pairs, directly from the Web UI as a result of Dynamic Licensing.

Dynamic Licensing

SDL ETS 8.2 introduces a new licensing mechanism which supports the following:

  • Processing Units (PU) and dynamic allocation of PUs to LPs, according to the administrator configuration.
  • Centralized License Manager, enabled on the Master host which distribute PUs to LPs, independently from the hosts.

The advantages of Dynamic Licensing include:

  • Dynamic allocation of PUs to LPs, based on usage needs
  • New ETS license = LPs + associated number of PUs allowed
  • Only 1 ETS license is required per ETS instance - the license file is installed on the Master host and the centralized License Manager distributes PUs to workers

Processing Units

When customers buy subscriptions, they buy a number of Language Pairs and their associated PUs. By default, 1 LP = 1 PU (a virtual unit that allows to deliver a throughput of 2000 words per minute), but customers can buy additional PUs at an extra cost to increase translation performance.

Up until SDL ETS 8.2, PUs could be reallocated only through the filing a ticket through Support. Starting with SDL ETS 8.2, you can (re)allocate PUs to the Language Pairs directly from the UI.

The PU (re)allocation can be changed at any time depending on the translation volume you need to deliver at a time.

License Manager

The ETS License Manager is a new server component, hosted on the ETS Master Host. It is responsible for the allocation of PUs to the different translation engines, independently from the hosts where the translation engines are installed.

The ETS License Manager requires the license file to be installed on the Master Host.
