What's new in this release

An overview of the new features and functionality of this ETS product release.

Version 8.3.1

SDL ETS version 8.3.1 is a patch release which introduces several changes.

Enhancements

  • Hyperlinks are now translated in Word documents.
  • The LP source and target names are added to the auto-generated download filename in the Web UI.
  • The Web UI now allows specifying a public URL. This enhancement is useful when using a reverse-proxy.
  • The Web UI and REST API now have options which specify the automatic purging and expiration of old translations.
  • The Web UI and REST API now support the display of the current Translation Engine mode.
  • LibreOffice is updated to v6.1.6.3.
  • Docker build scripts are updated.
  • Embedded API is updated to support Processing Unit allocation.
  • The edge-cloud translations are updated to submit requests in smaller batches for better progress reporting.

Resolved issues

  • Older translations are no longer displayed in the Quick Translate page when typing.
  • There are no new extra network connections when new LPs are detected in the cluster.
  • Fixed edge-cloud bug causing translations to occasionally block and timeout.
  • The text in smart-art diagrams can be translated as part of a Microsoft Office file.
  • Word files no longer display an empty header.xml output error, on some generated documents.
  • *.sdlxliff parsing properly unescapes <g> and <x> tags in <source-seg> content.
  • German dates are now segmented correctly.

Deprecated features

SDL ETS no longer supports the deprecated RC4 cipher in the listening of TLS connections.

Version 8.3

SDL ETS version 8.3 is a major release which introduces enhancements to existing functionalities.

What's new

  • Windows Support for NMT
    • Neural Language Pairs can now be installed on Windows Operating systems.
    • CPU Optimized for Quality and CPU Optimized for Speed modes are both supported. GPU is planned to be supported at a later stage.
    • Supported 64bit Windows operating systems: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8 and 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019
  • Enhanced PDF support
    • The new PDF conversion library produces better results with format preservation when translating *.pdf documents.
    • PDF translation default output is now set to Microsoft Word (*.docx). End-user can edit the translated document, and perform adjustments and modifications if needed.
    • Scanned PDF translation has also been improved and the conversion will now try to keep the formatting preserved.
  • Reporting API - allow to retrieve statistics from translation performed with ETS. The statistics cover Quick Translate, Document translations and API usage

Enhancements

  • You can download the myhosts.json file from the ETS Web UI, by accessing Manage/Deployment > Entitlements > Download Entitlements Profile.
  • You can consult the guidelines to create Docker images for ETS and start ETS in container-mode, in the ETS documentation.
  • You can select the operating mode when a Neural translation engine is created in the Web UI : (default) Auto-detect, CPU Optimized for Quality, CPU Optimized for Speed.
  • You can cancel and delete translated files on the Quick Translate page.
  • You can clear the source and target text boxes in Quick Translate by clicking on the cross appearing in the top-right corner of the source text box.
  • You can use the LDAP configuration page more easily: simpler workflow, simpler flow chart of operations.
  • You can access the Unknown Words and Transliteration functionalities only for SMT Language Pairs. If no SMT pair is running on the ETS instance, Unknown Words and Transliteration are not displayed in the Quick Translation options anymore.
  • Added support for OpenLDAP and an LDAP backend.
  • Added a configurable Login Agreement page that can be enabled by Admins to require user acceptance for new users.

Resolved issues

  • Segmentation
    • Power Point translations now properly segment the detected text.
    • Segmentation is optimized to prevent breaking-up extended unicode white-space characters.
  • Translation
    • Microsoft Word headers and footers located in extra page sections are now translated properly.
    • Excel text contained in text-boxes is now translated.
    • Translated documents now use the right-to-left and right-to-left format of the target language and not the source language.
    • Edge-Cloud now properly handles asynchronous translations.
  • Processes
    • Prevented Job Engines from indefinitely waiting for Edge-Cloud jobs that contain errors.
    • Prevented failed jobs which had a source set to Auto-detect from showing "Undefined". Failed jobs now display "Auto-detect" on the Translation Queue page.

Deprecated features

Browse Translate is disabled by default when installing ETS 8.3. Note that this feature will be fully disabled in ETS 8.4.

The K80 GPU support is planned to be deprecated in ETS 8.4.
