Upgrading the MT Edge application

To benefit from the latest MT (Machine Translation) developments, you can upgrade to a higher version of SDL Machine Translation Edge. Upgrade to 8.X from 7.X or 5.X is not supported, but upgrade from version 8.X to a newer 8.X is.

Before you begin

Check the TCP port values.

About this task

When upgrading to a major or minor version of SDL Machine Translation Edge, a new license file will be required. Starting with SDL Machine Translation Edge 8.2, a single license file will be required and will be installed on the Master host. You can provide the existing myhosts.json file of the master host to SDL support in order to receive a new SDL Machine Translation Edge (formerly known as SDL ETS) License file. The new license file will contain the Language Pairs and the number of Processing Units allowed (consult Dynamic Licensing and Processing Units for more details).

Procedure

  1. Make sure to perform a backup of SDL Machine Translation Edge before proceeding with the upgrade.
  2. Stop the SDL Machine Translation Edge service on all hosts to prevent access to the SDL Machine Translation Edge infrastructure during the upgrade.
  3. Upgrade SDL Machine Translation Edge on each host, starting with the Master host, by running the installer.
  4. If GPUs are used, you must upgrade the NVIDIA drivers. You need an NVIDIA driver 418.67 or higher.
  5. Once all hosts are upgraded, log in to the SDL Machine Translation Edge WebUI as administrator.
  6. Go to Manage > Deployment.
  7. Select the Hosts tab, to consult the previous configuration of Job Engines and Translation Engines.
  8. Select the Entitlements tab.
  9. This step is only required if upgrading from a minor version (8.0, 8.1, 8.2) because a new license is needed. Select Upload License File and select the newly generated License file.
The number of available Processing Units is displayed.
  10. This step is only required when upgrading from 8.0 or 8.1. Select Edit and assign the appropriate Processing Units to each of the Translation Engines (1 PU is a minimum for the Translation Engine to start).
  11. This step is only required when upgrading from 8.0 or 8.1. Select Save.
  12. Select the Hosts tab to check that all Translation Engines are started.
