Defining Promotions

When you define a Promotion, you specify: the Web site Publication and Page Region where you want the Promotion to appear, what content you want to display in the Promotion and when you want the Promotion to be triggered.

A Promotion consists of Publications, Page Regions, Triggers, and Content:

Procedure

  1. In the slide out navigation pane, select Targeting.

    The Promotion Dialog appears.

  2. Select a Promotion List from the drop-down menu.

    A list of Promotions available for a Web site are displayed.

  3. Click Add a new Promotion.

    The Add a new Promotion dialog appears.

  4. Enter a Promotion name.
  5. Deselect Enable this Promotion if you do not want the Promotion to be available immediately.
  6. Optional: Click Show more to define the following properties:
    • Promotion Title—defines the title of the Promotion displayed to visitors
    • Promotion Slogan—defines the slogan of the Promotion displayed to visitors
  7. Select the Where: Publications section:
    1. Choose a Publication from the list of Available Publications.
    2. Select Include Child Publications to make the Promotion available in this Publication and all Child Publications (by default, a Promotion is only available in the selected Publication).

      Select a Publication and click BluePrint Hierarchy to view the Publication in the BluePrint.

  8. Select the Where: Page Regions section, then select one or more regions where you want the Promotion to appear on your Web page:

    A Page Region is an area on a Web page where Promotions are displayed. Page Regions are configurable so the list displayed depends on your implementation.

  9. Select the When: Triggers section, then choose a trigger from the drop-down menu:
  10. Select the What to display section, then choose how you want to include content. You can choose a Folder, a Keyword, or individual Components:
    • Folder—when you select a Folder, all Components contained in the Folder can be included as content in a Promotion.
    • Keywords—when you select a Keyword, all Components that use the Keyword can be included as content in a Promotion.
    • Components—when you select individual Components, you are manually specifying the content that can be included as content in a Promotion.
  11. When you choose Select Content by Folder, use the navigate button to navigate through Folders then select a Folder in the list.
  12. When you choose Select Content by Keyword, use the navigate button to navigate through Keywords then select a Keyword.
  13. When you choose Select Content Individually:
    1. Browse to a Folder.
    2. Select one or more Components.
    3. Click Choose (the number of selected items is displayed in brackets)
    4. Select a Component Template from the drop-down menu to apply the Component Template to all the selected Components.

      Alternatively, if you want to apply different Component Templates to individual Components, select Select per item then choose a Component Template from the drop-down menu for each Component.

    5. Grab the Components on the left-hand side and drag-and-drop them to assign a higher priority. Components higher up in the list are displayed before those lower in the list.
    6. Click Add Items to add more Components to the Promotion.
  14. Select the Filtering and Ordering section if you want to filter the selected content on additional item values.

  15. Click Save when you have finished editing.

    The Promotion is saved and the dialog closes.

What to do next

When you create a Promotion it is added to the top of the Promotion List. The Promotion is therefore automatically assigned the highest priority above existing Promotions . Drag-and-drop the Promotions to a different position in the Promotion List to lower its priority.
