Example: Import a custom dictionary from Microsoft Word

You can choose to use a custom Microsoft Word dictionary automatically, if you select Microsoft Word in the Spelling settings in the Options dialog box. However, if you want to use the custom Word dictionary in combination with the Hunspell dictionaries, you must follow this procedure to import the dictionary.

About this task

This is useful if, for example, the Word dictionary might contain standard company names and technical terms.

To import a custom dictionary from Word into SDL Trados Studio:

Procedure

  1. Copy the Word custom dictionary to the user's spell checker folder for Studio.

    For example, copy:

    ...\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof\CUSTOM.DIC

    to the folder:

    ...\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\SDL\spell checker\

  2. Rename the copied file to have a lower case file name extension.

    For example, rename the file:

    ...\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\SDL\spell checker\CUSTOM.DIC

    to:

    ...\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\SDL\spell checker\CUSTOM.dic

  3. Using a text editor, edit the file CUSTOM.dic, and insert as a new first line, the number of words in the file. (Before you add the new line, the number of words is the same as the number of lines.)

You can use Word as your text editor, in which case you can use Word's Word Count tool to count the number of lines. Make sure you save the file in text format. To prevent Word adding a *.txt file name extension, specify the name in quotes, for example " custom.dic ".

  4. In Studio, add the file as a custom dictionary. See Add an Existing Custom Dictionary.
