Configuring Bilingual Excel file types
You can configure Bilingual Excel settings, so that you customize the way this file type is processed during translation or review. Use this file type to extract content from Microsoft Excel files where the source and target text is organized into the columns of a spreadsheet.
About this task
These settings specify how SDL Trados Studio extracts the content of source and target columns and how it displays it for translation in the Editor view. If your spreadsheet includes additional columns with reference information, you can also extract their content as comments or as document structure information. When you save and generate the target translation, SDL Trados Studio places the translated content inside the target Translation column of your Excel spreadsheet.
Procedure
- Decide for which projects you want to configure file type settings:
- For the active project, go to the Projects view, and on the Home tab, select Project Settings.
- For all future projects, go to .
- Expand the File Types list, and select the Bilingual Excel filter.
- Select the Common page.
- Under Columns:
- Under Exclude:
- Usually, you would not want to translate the name of the columns. However, if you need to extract the column heading for translation, clear the First line is column heading checkbox.
- Select the Translation column checkbox, if you want to exclude column content from translation.
- Clear the Cells containing formatted numbers checkbox, if you want to exclude cells with numbers from translation.
- Under Existing Translations:
- Under Context Information:
- Select Add.
- In the New Context Column dialog, type the name of the column which contains reference information such as the location of the strings in the source document or application. For example, context information such as header, table cell, button, list item is displayed in the Editor view when you click the code of the segment inside the Document Structure column. SDL Trados Studio uses the heading of the Excel context column to indicate the Location string in the Document structure information dialog box. This means that the First line is column heading option needs to be active so that Trados Studio can read the column heading before adding context information for your translation strings.
- Under Comment Information:
- Select Add.
- In the New Comment Column dialog, type the name of the column which contains instructions for translating the source strings. For example, you can include comments such as "Download is the name of the button. Translate this as a verb". SDL Trados Studio displays the content of the Comment Information column in the Comments window of the Editor view.
- Select the QuickInsert page.
- Specify QuickInsert settings to insert tags and formatting, or to insert text and special characters.
- Select the Embedded content page.
- Select Enable embedded content processing.
- In the Document structure information area, select Add to create extraction rules based on document structure information.
- In the Tag definition rules area, select Add to specify the tags which will be processed and to define them as translatable or non-translatable.
- Select OK.
