Local and Server-based termbases

Termbases may be local or server-based:

  • A local termbase is one that is a file-based termbase located on your computer or a local network.
  • A remote termbase is one that is on a server-computer where it can be used by anyone who has the necessary network (or Internet) and termbase access rights.

In general, local and server-based termbases look the same, have the same attributes and function in the same way. They are also based on the same data format (MultiTerm XML) and the same termbase model. Although data transactions are handled in different ways, the features that control termbase searching and editing are the same for both. The key differences between local and server-based termbases are:

  • Multiple users can work with the same server-based termbase at the same time.
  • Access to server-based termbases is controlled by the system administrator using access rights. So the differences are to do with login and access rights.

Termbase login

You do not have to log in to local termbases. However, you always have to log in to server-based termbases. Your SDL MultiTerm administrator provides you with details of how to connect to server-based servers and tells you what user name and password to use to log on. Your login credentials also contain information about the extent to which you can view and work with server-based termbase data.

Termbase access rights

When working with local termbases, you have unlimited user rights to termbase data. When working with server-based termbases, your access rights are defined by your MultiTerm administrator and encoded in your SDL MultiTerm Server login.
