QA Checker > Length verification

Use the QA Checker 3.0 > Length Verification settings to specify checks where the target segment text exceeds the permitted number of characters.

These settings appear in multiple dialogs in SDL Trados Studio. Go to Dialogs for verification settings for more information about finding the appropriate dialog.

OptionDescription

Length Verification

Check length limitation

Select this option to check if the target segment text exceeds the permitted number of characters. When this option is selected, it enables the two options below.

Next to this check, on the right-hand side, there is a drop-down list with three options: Error, Warning and Note. Select which severity you want to apply if this check finds errors.

Check if target segments are within file specific limits

Select this option to check if the segment is within the length limits for that document structure type specified in the file filter for that filter. These limits are accessible through the API and are also displayed for the user in the document structure column as additional information.

For example, by default the Microsoft Excel filter, specifies a length limit for the worksheet name of 31 as this is the maximum permitted length for the sheet name in Microsoft Excel.

Check if target segments are longer than character count

Select this option to check for segments where the number of characters exceeds a limit set by you.

Contexts

Check all segment contexts

Select this option to allow verification of all segments in a file, regardless of context. Every segment in the entire document structure is checked.

Check the following contexts only (one per line)

If you only want to check certain segments checked based on their location in the document structure, you can specify here what exactly should be checked.

The document structure location of each segment is displayed in the Document Structure column in the Editor window.

For example, if you only want to check segments that are part of a paragraph or are headings, you would type:

Paragraph

Heading

Enter each structure element on a separate line.

This option could be useful if you are translating a file that contains list items that must be below a certain length. To avoid a situation where every longer segment in the file would report an error, you would specify that only list items should be checked.
