Running batch processes
A batch process is performed by the system on project files, at your request. Batch processes are also known as batch tasks and batch task sequences (when several batch tasks are run at the same time, in a rigid order, on one or more project files).
For example, the batch process named Word Count, performs a word count on selected files and the word count results can be seen in the SDL Trados Studio views and reports.
You can:
- Perform a batch task on a single file, a group of files or on an entire project
- Select a number of batch tasks and put them into a task sequence; all of the tasks in the sequence are performed on the selected files
Task sequences
A task sequence contains multiple batch tasks. When you run a task sequence, all tasks in the sequence are performed on all the selected files: the tasks are performed in the order in which they appear in the sequence. A number of batch task sequences are provided for you and you can also create new ones.
Batch task settings
There are settings associated with each batch task and you can view and edit these. For example, if you choose the Pre-translate Files task, there are settings that define the minimum translation memory (TM) match value and what status should be given to 100% matches and context matches.
The settings that are displayed are the current, project settings. If you edit the settings in the Batch Processing wizard, the changes are also made to the project settings.
Accessing batch processing options
You select batch tasks and task sequences by going to the Home tab and selecting Batch Tasks. The batch tasks and sequences available on the:
- Projects view > Home tab > Tasks group > Batch Tasks are applied to the entire active project.
- Editor view > Home tab > File Actions group > Batch Tasks are applied to active document.
- Files view > Home tab > File Actions group > Batch Tasks are applied to selected files.
Batch tasks that process files do it in alphabetical order. This ensures consistency in results no matter the viewing or selection order used.

Viewing batch task data
When you run a batch task, the data generated by the task can be viewed in a report. For example, the Analyze Files report contains translation analysis figures for a project; the data for the Analyze Files report is generated during project creation, when the Prepare task sequence is run.
Working with SDL Trados GroupShare projects and batch tasks
If you perform a batch task on files that are from a Trados GroupShare server-based project, the files will be automatically checked out from the Trados GroupShare Project Server when you run the batch task. If there are files that are currently checked out by other users on the Trados GroupShare server, you will not be able to perform the batch task on that file. A warning message indicating why the file is not selected for processing is displayed on the Files page of the Batch Processing wizard.
