Setting up a staging server and live server
Set up a staging server and live server to prevent premature publishing of unapproved content to your live server.
Procedure
- Set up two machines as Presentation Servers. One machine is accessible to all potential visitors of your Web site: this is the Live server. The other has restricted access: this is the Staging server.
- If you implement Workflow, create a Workflow Status for your content (you can call it 'Live', for example) that indicates whether the content is ready to go live. Set up Workflow so that the right people can give this status to content.
- Create two Publication Targets, one for Live and one for Staging. For the Live Publication Target, set the Minimum Approval Status to 'Live'.
- Create a Target Type and configure it as an Allowed Target Type in both Publication Targets. Content authors and editors alike can now publish to the Target Type, but content only gets published to the Live server if it has been approved.
