Can I publish a map or a single topic?

For proofing or testing, you can publish a map or single topic independent of a publication.

About this task

Question: I don't want to create a publication to publish just one topic or a map. Can I publish a map or topic independent of a publication object?
If you simply want to print a topic, you can select the topic in Publication Manager, right-click in the right, view pane, then select Print. However, to publish and save to an online file using a format option such as PDF or CHM, follow the procedures below.

Procedure

  1. Locate the object (topic or map) to publish in the web client.
  2. Select the object then select the version in the top right pane.
  3. Select the version and language in the bottom right pane.
  4. Click the publish icon on the menu bar in the bottom right pane.
    A Publish window is displayed.
  5. Note the Output format field and modify the option if necessary; use the menu to select a configured publish option.
  6. For Publishing context, select:
    • use selected publishing context to apply a publish condition that is resident in the topic; i.e. a feature or value that appears in the document. To apply conditions, you must click the assist (ellipsis) button, select the condition(s) to apply, then click OK.
    • include all conditional text (default) to publish all text regardless of publish conditions resident in the topic.
    • exclude all conditional text to eliminate publishing any text that has a publish condition set.
  7. Change other options as needed.
Use the Assist (ellipsis) button to select options.
  8. Click Publish.
A confirmation window appears with the publish status. When done, the Status column indicates Success.
  9. Click CreationDate to access the Event Monitor Details window.
  10. Note the following in the Event Monitor Details window to help locate the published object:
    • CreationDate: Indicates when the publishing was done; helps to identify the correct folder if you publish more than once or if others are publishing.
    • HostName: this is the name of the server on which the published topic is located.
    • EventData: this contains the name of the file located within the tag, <exportdocid>. This is required to identify the folder on the server that contains the publication.
  11. The published object can be located on the server: <HostName>\InfoShare\DataDita\PublishingService\Data\DataExports\<exportdocid>\<num>\<lang>\out

    For example: \\fs01\InfoShare\DataDita\PublishingService\Data\DataExports\GUID-94886F8C-6524-40FD-A941-8569C3B7B853.20120206171523818\2\en\out
