Consequences of promoting or demoting

Promoting or demoting a content item has a number of consequences, including the possibility of data loss.

Promoting or demoting a content item has the following consequences:
  • All versions of the content item except the current one are deleted. You cannot undo this operation.
  • If the organizational item (such as a Folder, Structure Group or Category) overrides the default permission setting called "Inherit from parent", after the promotion or demotion, such custom permission settings are lost. You cannot undo this operation.
  • If you promote, the item becomes a shared item in its current Publication.
  • If you demote, the item disappears from its current Publication.
  • If you promote or demote an organizational item configured for translation, its translation configuration does not move along with the item. Instead, you see a warning that the translation configuration remains on the shared item (if promoting) or will be lost (if demoting).
  • Any child items that had translation information referring back to the item now refers to the new promoted or demoted item. If the translation information did not refer to the latest version of the item, the version information is lost.
