Creating a Dreamweaver Template

A Dreamweaver Template Building Block is an Adobe Dreamweaver Template (.dwt file) created in Adobe Dreamweaver. An Adobe Dreamweaver Template looks like an ordinary page in Adobe Dreamweaver, but instead of actual content it contains variables that represent the pieces of content found in the package as well as indicators for repeating and conditional regions on the page.

Before you begin

To create a Dreamweaver Template, you must have:
  • installed and configured a WebDAV Server on the Content Manager Server machine, and on the client machine you must have set up a Dreamweaver templating client machine. For more information, see Setting up legacy Dreamweaver templating.
  • knowledge of the contents of the package that serves as input to this Template Building Block—this information must be agreed upon with the implementer who makes the previous Template Building Block in the Compound Template sequence. You can examine the contents of the package present to the Template Building Block in the Template Builder. Refer to Package for details.
  • knowledge of the parameters that are passed to this Template Building Block, and their possible values—this information must be agreed upon with the person building the Compound Template using Template Builder.

Procedure

  1. Open Adobe Dreamweaver.
  2. Choose File > New from the menu.
  3. Create a Blank Page of Type HTML template . When you click Create, the new file opens.
  4. Choose File > Save As to save the template. Browse to the location on your file system that you use to store your local copies of Content Manager items. You specified this location when you created a new site. It is recommended to store SDL Tridion Sites templates with your other templates.
  5. If you are publishing to a Web site that is not UTF-8-encoded, or if you are unsure whether your Web site is UTF-8 encoded or not, switch to code view and remove the following line:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" />
  6. Check in the Template. Right-click the template and choose Check in from the context menu.

    When the file is checked in, a lock indicates this:

Results

You have now created a Template Building Block containing the Adobe Dreamweaver Template that you can use with SDL Tridion Sites.
