Creating a Promotion

Create a Promotion by selecting the promotional content and defining where and when it should appear.

About this task

To create a Promotion, you need to define the following elements:

  • The websites and areas of a webpage where you want to display the Promotion.
  • The conditions that determine when to trigger the Promotion

You can add Triggers to a Promotion in any combination of the following ways:

    • Adding one or more Contact details directly to a Promotion
    • Adding one or more Contact Keywords directly to a Promotion
    • Adding one or more Contact Segments to the Promotion, each Segment consisting of a saved filter of Contact Details and Keywords
  • The promotional content itself, which are Components in Content Manager.

Procedure

  1. In the slide out navigation pane, select Targeting.

    The Targeting Dashboard appears.

  2. In the Source drop-down menu:
    1. Select a environment for which you want to manage Promotions.
For example, you will typically have a "Staging" environment and a "Live" environment:
      • Staging is an environment that is available only to internal users and is where you develop and test targeting functionality and new promotional content. On this environment, you can use Experience Manager for inline editing and testing.
      • Live is your external, public-facing environment where visitors can access your production content.
    2. Click the Promotions tab to view the list of Promotions available for the environment.
A list of Promotions for which you have Manage Promotions rights is displayed.
  3. Click Add a new Promotion, and do the following:
    1. Enter a Promotion name.
    2. (Optional) If you do not want the Promotion to be available immediately, clear the Enable this Promotion checkbox.
    3. (Optional) Click Show more to define the following properties:
      • Promotion Title—defines the title of the Promotion displayed to website visitors
      • Promotion Slogan—defines the slogan of the Promotion displayed to website visitors
  4. Select the Where tab.
The Context options area on the left side of the page indicates the three levels at which you can select the Promotion location, starting with the top level, Publications, then Pages, and finally Page Regions.
  5. With the Publications option selected (it is initially selected for you), select a Publication from the list on the right side of the page. This is the website where the Promotions will appear.
  6. (Optional) Select Include Child Publications to make the Promotion available in this Publication and all Child Publications (by default, a Promotion is only available in the selected Publication).
  7. From the Context options, select the Pages option.
The right side of the page displays the Pages where the Promotion can appear. Initially, a new Promotion has no limitations on which Pages in the website can display it.
  8. If you want it to appear only on one or more specific Pages, do the following:
    1. Click Add Page(s)
    2. In the Structure Groups hierarchy, locate and select as many Pages as needed. You can select multiple Pages within a given level in the hierarchy.
    3. Click Choose (# Pages) to add the Pages to your list of selected Pages.
    4. Repeat steps b and c as often as needed until all Pages you want are selected.
  9. From the Context options, select the Page Regions option.
The right side of the page displays a list of available Page Regions where the Promotion can appear.
  10. Select one or more regions where you want the Promotion to appear on the previously selected webpage.
  11. Select the When: Triggers tab, then do the following:
    1. From the list, select the type of Trigger.
    2. On the right side of the page, define the Trigger, which varies with the type of Trigger. For a list of the available Triggers, refer to the Promotion Trigger reference.

Some triggers allow you to select multiple values. In this case, the Promotion will appear if either condition is met.

    3. Repeat steps a and b as many times as needed.

When adding multiple triggers to a Promotion, all of the triggers' conditions must be met for the Promotion to be triggered.

  12. Select the What to display tab,
The Content options area on the left side of the page provide ways to add promotional content to your Promotion and to then filter and adjust the ordering of the selected content.
  13. With the Content Selection (# items) option selected (it is initially selected for you), use the options on the right side of the page to choose your content:
    • Select Content by Folder—when you select a Folder, all Components contained in the Folder can be included as content in a Promotion.
    • Select Content by Keyword—when you select a Keyword, all Components that use the Keyword can be included as content in a Promotion.
    • Select Content Individually—when you select individual Components, you are manually specifying the content that can be included as content in a Promotion.
      1. Locate and select one or more Components, and then click Choose (# items). (The button displays the number of selected items.)
      2. To add additional Components, click Add items and repeat the previous step.
      3. Select at least one Component Template to define the look and feel of each Component on a webpage.

If the selected Components permit, you can select a single Component Template to apply to all the selected Components.

Alternatively, select the Select per item checkbox, and then choose a different Component Template to apply to each Component.

      4. To adjust the priority of the Components, grab the control and drag-and-drop them to assign a higher priority. Components higher up in the list are displayed before those lower in the list.
  14. (Optional) If you want to filter the selected content, including specifying a maximum number of returned items, select the Filtering and Ordering option from the Content options. Define the filtering, as needed.
    • Filtering that is applied to the selected content to refine the results
    • Maximum number of returned items
    • Method used to order the selected content items and the sort order (ascending or descending)
  15. Click Save and Close when you have finished editing.

The Promotion is saved and the window closes.

What to do next

When you create a Promotion it is added to the top of the Promotion List. The Promotion is therefore automatically assigned the highest priority above existing Promotions . Drag-and-drop the Promotions to a different position in the Promotion List to lower its priority.
