You can use Template Builder to create the various template types, including Page Templates (if used for template-based publishing), Component Templates, and a Template as a Template Building Block. (Page Templates intended for data publishing should be empty and can be created without using Template Builder.)
Before you begin
Creating templates requires the following:
- Template Builder is installed.
- You have Template Management rights.
- You have write permissions for the Folder in which you intend to create the template.
Procedure
- From the Windows Start menu (or from the Tools menu of the Content Manager Explorer), open Template Builder.
Note: If Template Builder is running, close any open Template (save changes, if needed).
- Create a new Template in one of the following ways:
- Click New Compound Template.
- Select File > New from the main menu.
- Click the New button. Press Ctrl+N.
The New Compound Template dialog opens.
- In Content Manager:
- Specify the Content Manager in which you want to create this Template by selecting or typing the URL of the Content Manager Explorer website.
- Click Go to see the list of Publications in this Content Manager.
- Enter a user name and password, if prompted.
- Select a Publication and navigate to and select a Folder in the Publication in which you want to create the Template.
- Enter a Name for your Template.
- Select the Type of Template you want to create:

Page Template

Transforms a Content Manager Page item into a publishable webpage.

Component Template

Transforms a Content Manager Component item into a part of a publishable webpage.

Template Building Block

Creates a Template that you can embed as a Template Building Block in another Template.
- Click OK to commit your settings.
- Assemble Template Building Blocks into a Template. For more information, see Assembling Template Building Blocks in a Template.
Results
You have created a Template with the following properties:

BluePrint:

If the Publication in which you created the Template is a BluePrint parent Publication, the Template is shared to all child Publications.

The version of the Template is set to 1.0

Workflow:

If a Workflow Process is associated with the type of Template you selected, the Template enters Workflow and is assigned to the user that created it. That user can work on the Template, and Finish Activity on it, causing it to enter the next step in the Workflow Process.
