Enabling the creation of new Web pages

You can enable the creation of new Web pages by using any Page as a Page Type. Users can use such a Page Type as the basis for a new Page. Turning a Page into a Page Type requires administrator-level rights.

Procedure

  1. In Content Manager Explorer, create a new Page or open an existing one.
  2. On the General tab of this Page, select Use this Page as a Page Type and fill in the properties that appear:
    Page Type Description
Describe the Page Type so that users who create a Page can understand what type of Page they would be creating.
    Page Type Example URL
Provide the Web address of a Web page that is an example of this Web page. Click Preview to see the Web page.
  3. By default, a new Page based on this Page Type contains the Component Presentations listed on the Component Presentations tab, just like the current Page. This means that SDL Tridion Sites assumes that they all contain reusable content, such as a logo, a banner, a legal disclaimer and so on.

But you may intend some or all Component Presentations on the Page as empty placeholders, intended to be used as form fields for the author to fill in after they create the Page. If this is true in your case, such Component Presentations need to be copied rather than included.

To do this, select the Component Presentations tab and select a Component/Component Template combination which you intend to use as an empty placeholder.

A number of tabs appear in the area on the right.
  4. Select the Page Type Settings tab.
  5. Change the setting from Include this Component Presentation to Include a Component Presentation that contains a copy of this Component.
If you use this Component in multiple Component Presentations on this Page, then saving the Page causes all of those Component Presentations to have the setting you configured last for any of those Component Presentations.
A number of new controls appear.
  6. Under Create a copy of the Component in the following Folder, click the Browse button and in the dialog that opens, navigate to the Folder in which you want to store the copy that gets created when a user creates a new Page, and click Select to commit your selection and close the dialog.
  7. Under Format string for the title of the copy, enter a formatted string to construct the title of this copy. Your can include placeholders in your format string, which are listed under the input box. Hover over the placeholders to see what each placeholder represents. SDL strongly recommends including %D% in your format string to guarantee uniqueness of your Component copy title. You can check what the name of a Component copy created right now would look like under Component title preview.
  8. Repeat these steps for every Component Presentation for which you want a new Page to include a copy rather than the original.
  9. Save and close the Page.

Results

Users who create a new Page can now select a Page Type based on this Page. If they do, the Page they create will include copies or originals of the Component Presentations on the Component Presentations tab, as configured.
