Localizing items

In a Child Publication, you can localize an item shared from a parent Publication. This means that you create a local copy of the item that users can edit. If an item is a local copy, you can also unlocalize it to revert to the shared item from the Parent Publication.

Before you begin

To perform this task, the following must be true:
  • You have rights to the item you intend to localize.
  • You have localize permission for the containing organizational item (Structure Group, Folder, Category).
  • The item you intend to localize is a shared item.
  • The item you intend to localize has at least the Minimum Approval Status required for localization in this Publication (if a Minimum Approval Status was configured).

Procedure

  1. Access the Content Manager Explorer website.
  2. Navigate to and select the item you intend to localize.
  3. Open the Ribbon toolbar Organize tab and click Localize.

Results

The following is true for a localized item:
  • Users can edit the item.
  • Users can unlocalize the item, which means removing the local copy and reverting to the shared item.
  • Users cannot delete or cut-and-paste a localized item, because it is a copy of an item originally shared from the Parent Publication.
  • If the localized item is a Folder, Structure Group, or Category, the items in such a container was not localized along with it.
  • If the Publication in which you localize the item has Child Publications, any Child Publications that used the shared item previously now share the localized item from this Publication.
  • If the localized tem has an associated Workflow Process in this Publication, the first time a user edits and saves the item, the Content Manager places the item in Workflow and assigns it to the user that edited the item.
