The most important content items in Content Manager are Pages and Components.
-
Pages
-
A Page in the Content Manager represents a webpage on the published website. Pages contain Components. A Page combines with a Page Template to create a publishable webpage. When using Regions, map a Region Schema to the Page Template to define the Page structure.
- In a template-based publishing model, the Page Template normally includes Template Building Blocks that define branding and other design elements.
- In a data-only publishing model, selecting a Page Template is required although the Page Template itself is empty, that is, with no Template Building Blocks.
-
Components
-
A Component represents a piece of content on a webpage, such as a news item or a picture.
-
- In a template-based publishing model, the combination of the Component Template with the Component creates a publishable piece of content called a Component Presentation. The Component Template can add functionality to the Component, such as whether the Component Presentation should be hidden from certain types of website visitors. The Compound Component Template also specifies whether and how to visualize each of the various fields of the Component on the webpage.
- In a templateless, data-only publishing model, no Component Template is required and there is no concept of a Component Presentation. The look and feel of content is removed from the template and done instead by the application that uses the published content, such as a website, mobile app or a kiosk display screen.
As of SDL Tridion Sites 9.5, the template-based publishing framework is considered legacy in favor of templateless, data-only publishing.
