Template tasks in Content Manager Explorer

This section describes the generic tasks you can perform on a Page Template, Component Template, or Template as Template Building Block in Content Manager Explorer.

You can search the source code of the Template or Template Building Block by searching the field called ContentText. Specifically, to search for a string called foo in the Templates and Template Building Blocks in your current location and its subfolders, enter the following in the search input text field: ContentText:*foo* (note the use of asterisks).

You can also perform a number of tasks by opening the item and using the following buttons in the various tabs of the Ribbon toolbar:

Saves the Template.

Saves the Template and closes the dialog.

Saves the Template and creates and opens a new Template.

Checks in an item that you have checked-out.

Checks out a checked-in item for your exclusive use.

Undoes the changes to an item you have checked-out; the previous version of the item remains the current version and your changes are discarded.

Displays the Version History List which lists all versions for these items. In the Version History List, you can perform the following tasks:

View a version
display a version in read-only mode
Compare two versions
compare two version of a Component, Multimedia Component or Page rendered with this Template
Roll back to a previous version
roll back to a previous version of an item. You can either discard previous versions or designate a previous version as the current version
Deleting a version
delete specified versions

Localizes the Template.

Unlocalizes the Template.

Publishes the Template. The following describes the Publish/Republish actions on a Page Template:

  • If the Page Template is used on a published Page, all Pages on which the Page Template is used are republished.
  • If the Page Template is used on a Page but the Page has never been published, that Page is not published.

The following describes the Publish/Republish actions on a Component Template:

  • If the Component Template is part of a Component Presentation that is embedded on a published Page, all Pages on which the Component Template is used are republished
  • If the Component Template is part of a published dynamic Component Presentation, all dynamic Component Presentations in which the Component Template is used, are republished.

Unpublishes the template. The following describes the Unpublish action on a Page Template:

  • If the Page Template is used on a published Page, all Pages on which the Page Template is used are unpublished.

The following describes the Unpublish action on a Component Template:

  • If the Component Template is part of a Component Presentation that is embedded on a published Page, all Pages on which the Component Template is used are unpublished
  • If the Component Template is part of a published dynamic Component Presentation, all dynamic Component Presentations in which the Component Template is used, are unpublished.

Shows the relationships between the Template item and other items.

For a Page Template:

shows items that this Page Template uses, for example, its Template Building Blocks
Published to
shows targets to which a Page that uses this Page Template has been published

For a Component Template:

Used in
shows items that use this Component Template, for example, Components
Uses
shows items that this Component Template uses, for example, its linked Schemas
Published to
shows targets to which a Component that uses this Component Template has been published

For a Template used as a Template Building Block:

Used in
shows items that use this Template Building Block, for example, other Templates
Uses
shows items that this Template Building Block uses, for example, further embedded Template Building Blocks

Previews a Page Template or Component Template by combining it with a Page or Component, respectively.

For a Page Template:

  • Click the Preview button.
  • In the Preview window that opens, click Browse to browse for a Page or Component that can be rendered using this Template.
  • Select the Page or Component and click OK.
  • Click Preview to display the rendered Web page or rendered Component (Component Presentation) as it will appear on the Web site.

Compares two versions of the Template.
