Content Manager server prerequisites

This topic lists the required and supported software for the Content Manager server. In most cases, the installer will install a supported version of the required prerequisite if missing.

Recommended prerequisites

SDL recommends the following set of Content Manager server prerequisites:

Operating system languages

The operating system on which Content Manager server runs must be in one of the following languages:

  • US English
  • French
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Dutch
  • Japanese
  • Simplified Chinese

Operating system versions and editions

The Microsoft Windows operating systems on which Content Manager server runs are as follows.

Supported:

  • Windows Server 2019 (x64)
  • Windows Server 2016 (x64)

Deprecated: No operating systems are deprecated.

As a general rule, ensure that the latest updates are installed on your Microsoft Windows operating system.

Server Roles
Ensure that the "Web Server" Server Role is enabled.

Database clients

Content Manager server does not require you to install any database client software.

Web and application Server

Content Manager server requires the following web and application server:

Supported:
  • Microsoft IIS 10.0

Deprecated: No web and application servers are deprecated.

Note the following:

  • You need a 32-bit compatible edition of these software components, even if your operating system has a 64-bit architecture.
  • You can install the Web and Application server from the Add/Remove Programs screen in your Control Panel, by selecting Add/Remove Windows Components.
  • To use WebDAV, ensure that the Microsoft WebDAV Extension is disabled (this is the case by default).

Third-party software components

Content Manager server requires the following third-party applications.

Microsoft CAPICOM 2.0.0.1 or higher

If you do not install this application yourself, the installer installs version 2.1.0.2 for you.

Only if you install CAPICOM yourself, register the CAPICOM assembly after installation by doing the following:

  • Open a command prompt and navigate to the folder in which the CAPICOM assembly is located (this location defaults to C:\Program Files\Microsoft CAPICOM 2.1.0.2 SDK\Lib\X86\.
  • From the command prompt, execute the following command:
    regsvr32 capicom.dll
  • The DLL is now registered.
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable

You need Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable SP1 (x64) and Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable (x64). If you run the installer without having these software components installed, the installer automatically installs them for you.

.NET Framework

Content Manager server requires one of the following .NET Framework releases:

Supported: Microsoft .NET Framework version 4.8, CLR 4

Deprecated: No .NET Framework version is deprecated.

The installer does not install the Microsoft .NET Framework for you; you need to have installed a compatible .NET version before running the installer.

.NET Core Runtime

Several Content Manager features require that you install version 3.1 of the .NET Core Runtime:
  • External Content Library (ECL)
  • Add-ons
  • Access Management

Download the .NET Core Runtime for either Windows or Linux from the following location: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-core/3.1

Java

Content Manager server requires Java for the following functionality:

  • Publishing content from the Content Manager
  • Searching content in the Content Manager

For publishing and for searching, Content Manager has the following Java prerequisites:

Supported:
  • AdoptOpenJDK OpenJDK 11 (18.9 LTS release) using the HotSpot JVM
  • Oracle JDK 11
If you want to use Oracle JDK 11, then before running the Content Manager installer, you must do the following on your Content Manager server machine:
  • Install Oracle JDK 11.
  • Add the bin\ subdirectory of your Java folder (for example, c:\Program Files\Java\jdk-11.0.4\bin) to your PATH environment variable.

If you do not have Java 11 installed, the installer installs AdoptOpenJDK OpenJDK 11 (18.9 LTS release) using the HotSpot JVM.

The Content Manager server supports the following user directories (it does not require either):
