Content Manager Explorer functionality introduced in SDL Web 8

New features and functionality in the browser-based Content Manager Explorer user interface.

View on Site button

A new button in the user interface lets the user see a Component or Page on the published Web page.

Quick site creation: Site Wizard

From the Sites slide-out navigation, you can access a wizard that lets you create a site quickly and efficiently.

Improvements to searching the LDAP directory

When searching users in an LDAP directory, SDL Web filters first and only then retrieves the filtered users. This improves performance, especially if the LDAP directory is large.

Additionally, you can now search users by searching for the first part of their user name or user description.

No more upload directory

Uploaded files are stored in a folder on the Content Manager server machine, rather than in a Content Manager Explorer location you need to separately clean up or grant write access to.

Displaying of actual user names

Various parts of the user interface displayed the account name (for example, USERDOMAIN\rstevenson) rather than the actual display name of the user (Robert Stevenson). The user interface was updated to show display names rather than account names wherever possible. (Of course, in some screens, such as those related to user management, both the account name and the display name need to be shown.)

Increased user control of the Notification panel

Two improvements to the Notification panel, available from the top of the screen: users can now mark all items in the Show Pending screen as read, and users can clear all notifications from the Show All screen.

Format Area: clipboard access through browser only

To cut, copy and paste in a Format Area, users can only use the keystrokes supported by the internet browser they use; there are no more Cut, Copy or Paste buttons in the toolbar.
