You create Compound Templates (Compound Page Templates, Compound Component Templates, or Template Building Blocks) in Template Builder.
Before you begin
To create a Compound Template you must have Template Management rights as well as write permissions for the Folder in which you intend to create the Compound Template.
Procedure
- Start Template Builder by selecting Start from the Windows menu and selecting SDL Web > Template Builder from All Programs or Programs.
Note: If Template Builder is running, close any open Compound Template (save changes if needed).
- Create a new Compound Template in one of the following ways:
- Click New Compound Template.
- Select File > New from the main menu.
- Click the New button. Press Ctrl+N.
The New Compound Template dialog opens.
- In Content Manager:
- Specify the Content Manager in which you want to create this Compound Template by selecting or typing the URL of the Content Manager Explorer Web site.
- Click Go to see the list of Publications in this Content Manager.
- Enter a user name and password, if prompted.
- Select a Publication and navigate to and select a Folder in the Publication in which you want to create the Compound Template.
- Enter a Name for your Compound Template.
- Select the Type of Compound Template you want to create:

Page Template

Transforms a Content Manager Page item into a publishable Web page.

Component Template

Transforms an Content Manager Component item into a part of a publishable Web page.

Template Building Block

Creates a Compound Template that you can embed as a Template Building Block in another Compound Template.
- Click OK to commit your settings.
- Assemble Template Building Blocks into a Compound Template. For more information, see Assembling Template Building Blocks in a Compound Template.
Results
You have created a Compound Template with the following properties:

BluePrint:

If the Publication in which you created the Compound Template is a BluePrint parent Publication, the Compound Template is shared to all child Publications.

The version of the Compound Template is set to 1.0

Workflow:

If a Workflow Process is associated with the type of Compound Template you selected, the Compound Template enters Workflow and is assigned to the user that created it. That user can work on the Compound Template, and Finish Activity on it, causing it to enter the next step in the Workflow Process.
