You can track if an e-mail recipient opened the e-mail message by inserting a special tag in the Page Template of an E-mail Page. This tag inserts a reference to a small image stored on the Web server.
About this task
When the recipient opens the e-mail, the recipient’s e-mail client retrieves the image, and Outbound E-mail registers the action.
Important: Plain-text e-mails cannot access any resources when they are opened, so inserting an img tag in a plain-text e-mail has no effect. Therefore, Outbound E-mail can only check if an e-mail was opened if that e-mail is HTML-formatted. (A number of other conditions must also be met: the user must have an internet connection when opening the e-mail, and the e-mail application that opens the e-mail must allow access to external screenshots.)
