Upgrading SDL Web
This section describes how you can upgrade from an earlier version of SDL Web (formerly called SDL Tridion) to SDL Web 8.5. You can upgrade to SDL Web 8.5 from SDL Tridion 2013 SP1 HR1 or SDL Web 8 with Cumulative Update 1 applied.
- About upgrading
The upgrading documentation describes how to upgrade each part of your SDL Web system to SDL Web 8.5. - Upgrading Content Manager databases
Upgrade your Content Manager database by running a PowerShell script. - Upgrading add-on products
Unless explicitly indicated otherwise, upgrade add-on products by uninstalling them before upgrading Content Manager, then (re)installing them afterward. This section explains which versions of add-on products are compatible with SDL Web 8.5 and which hotfixes you need to apply. - Upgrading the Content Manager server
Upgrade your Content Manager server and related features, such as Visio Workflow Designer and WebDAV Connector, by running the installer. - Upgrading the Experience Manager
To upgrade Experience Manager, upgrade the prerequisites on the client machine, if needed. You also need to upgrade the Content Delivery Roles called Session-enabled Content Service and Preview. - Upgrading the Content Manager Explorer client
Upgrade the Web-based Content Manager Explorer client by checking changes in prerequisites and clearing the Internet cache. - Upgrading the Workflow Designer client
Upgrade Workflow Designer by uninstalling and reinstalling the product on each client machine. - Upgrading or setting up .NET assembly templating
Upgrade (or install) .NET assembly templating by copying resource files. You can install .NET assembly templating on the same machine as Template Builder. - Upgrading or setting up Template Builder
Upgrade (or install) Template Builder on a client machine by running the installer from the Tools tab of Content Manager Explorer. - Upgrading or setting up Dreamweaver Templating
Upgrade (or install) Dreamweaver Templating by connecting to the Content Manager from Adobe Dreamweaver using WebDAV. This is explained as part of the installation documentation. - Upgrading your Content Delivery databases
Upgrade your Content Delivery databases (Content Data Store and the Experience Manager database) in one of two ways: by running a PowerShell script or by manually running SQL scripts. You only need to run the SQL scripts directly if you have a pressing reason to do so, for example, if you want to install an Oracle database on a non-Windows system. You can skip this step altogether if you only use a file system for storage. If you are upgrading from SDL Tridion 2013 SP1, note also that as of SDL Web 8, Content Delivery requires an additional database called the Discovery Service database, and that for any upgrade, Content Delivery requires a further database called the State Store database. Refer to the installation documentation for more information. - Upgrading or migrating Content Delivery
If you are upgrading from SDL Tridion 2013 SP1 HR1, you can update your existing Content Delivery software in various ways, ranging from a conservative upgrade that takes full advantage of backward compatibility to a more future-proof upgrade that amounts to a migration to the new architecture. If you are upgrading from SDL Web 8, the upgrade to SDL Web 8.5 adds two new Roles, and the architecture remains unchanged. Note, however, that Java/JSP Web application-based microservices, which were already deprecated, are now actively discouraged. - Upgrading the UGC database
If you have UGC (User-Generated Content) installed as a part of SDL Tridion 2013 SP1 HR1 or SDL Web 8 with Cumulative Update 1 applied, upgrade your existing Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server UGC database by running a PowerShell script (for Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server on Windows) or manually running scripts (for Oracle on a non-Windows system). - Upgrading Audience Manager and Outbound E-mail
Upgrade the various Audience Manager and Outbound E-mail databases by running a PowerShell script, upgrade the Content Manager Server side by running the installer, and upgrade Synchronization Server and Presentation Server by updating the resources used in these Web applications. Note that as of SDL Web 8, Outbound E-mail is a deprecated product feature. - Upgrading Translation Manager
To upgrade Translation Manager, upgrade the Translation Manager database and run the Content Manager installer. - Upgrading to SDL Web Experience Optimization 8.5
Read this section if you have a version of SmartTarget or the standalone product SDL Web Experience Optimization installed in combination with SDL Tridion 2013 SP1, and you want to upgrade to Experience Optimization 8.5 (which is now a part of SDL Web). - Upgrading the Context Expression Extension
To upgrade Context Expression Extension, upgrade the Content Deployer extension and the Context Expression Extension Cartridge.
