Automatic identification and support for TM upgrades

Translation memories (TMs) are subject to many changes throughout their life cycle. When such changes occur, translators are now notified to upgrade the TMs so that Trados Studio offers them the most accurate translation hits during the translation process. This enhancement applies to file-based TMs only and it does not apply to AnyTMs.

TM changes

TM changes occur constantly and they affect the way translation units (TUs) are processed during translation. Previous versions lacked a mechanism that would notify users when changes occurred, which meant that reindexing and fragment match capabilities went unnoticed.

Frequent TM changes which trigger a TM upgrade include:
  • Changes related to project or TM settings
  • Changes related to variables, abbreviations, fields etc.
  • Changes related to the TU alignment process
  • Sharing, creating or editing a TM in different versions of Trados Studio

TM upgrade process

When you upgrade a TM, several processes occur automatically:
  • The TM is backed up.
  • The TM is re-indexed.
  • The fine-grained alignment (FGA) model is rebuilt and the TUs are aligned.

As a result, the TM now includes refreshed TUs and the suggested matches can be retrieved with great accuracy during translation.

TM upgrade benefits

TM upgrade ensures that the translation values for fuzzy and exact matches are optimal.

The TM upgrade supports all languages and is particularly useful when processing placeables or word splitting (hyphen, dash or apostrophes), which influences the fragment match process and the overall accuracy and relevance of translation suggestions.

Batch upgrade

The TM Upgrade Wizard is now able to perform batch reindexing and enabling the TMs for upLIFT. This means you can use the Upgrade Wizard to bring all your TMs up-to-date in one batch process rather than one-by-one in the project settings.
