Batch editing TUs

You can edit translation units (TUs) via batch tasks, to commit the same changes to a large number of TUs in your translation memory (TM), automatically.

Before you begin

If you want to edit a set of TUs (not the entire TM), the filter that will select the TUs must exist before you start the Batch Edit wizard.

About this task

When you apply a batch edit to a TM, you are not required to authorize the editing of each individual TU affected by the batch process. However, you are required to set up each batch process by specifying:
  • How to identify the TUs to be edited
  • The type of change the TUs will incur

For example, to batch edit TUs, you have to create a filter that identifies the TUs to be edited. Once you do this, Trados Studio searches the TM for all TUs that match the filter and automatically edits it.

Procedure

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Go to the Translation Memory view, and in the navigation tree, select the TM whose contents you want to export.
    • Go to the Translation Memory view. If the TM does not appear in the navigation tree, select File > Open > Open Translation Memory.
  2. Go to the Home tab and select Batch Edit.
  3. In the Batch Edit wizard, on the Batch Edit Script page, specify which TUs should be updated and how this should happen:
    • You can load a batch edit script that was previously saved to a file. Select Load. In the Open TM Batch Edit Script dialog, browse to the file, select it and select Open.
    • Specify the settings from scratch. Go to step 4.
  4. Specify how you want to apply the batch edit:
    • If you do not want to apply the edit to the entire TM, select a filter that identifies the TUs you want to edit.
    • If you want all of the edit actions to be applied to matching TUs, in the Continuation box, select Always execute all edit actions in the list for each TU.
    • If, after applying one edit to a TU, you do not want further edits to be made to the same TU, in the Continuation box, select Only allow one edit action to change each TU.
  5. Select Add, and then select the type of edit you want to perform:
    • If you choose Find and Replace Text, complete the Edit Action: Find and Replace Text dialog, and select OK to add the edit action to the list, in the Action box.
    • If you choose Change Field Values, complete the Edit Action: Change Field Value dialog, and select OK to add the edit action to the list, in the Action box.
    • If you choose Delete Field Values, complete the Edit Action: Delete Field Value dialog, and select OK to add the edit action to the list, in the Action box.
    • If you choose Delete Tags, complete the Edit Action: Delete Tags dialog, and select OK to add the edit action to the list, in the Action box.
  6. Repeat step 5 until all of the required edit actions have been added to the Action box. If the actions need to be applied in a particular order, use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to put the actions into the required order.
  7. If you want to save this batch edit script to a file, select Save and complete the Save TM Batch Edit Script dialog.
  8. Select Finish. Trados Studio starts editing TUs and the Applying Batch Edit Script page is displayed.
  9. On the Applying Batch Edit Script page, check the progress:
