Batch task sequences for existing projects

You can run default or custom batch task sequences on existing projects or project files. You can run batch tasks individually or in a task sequence. When you run a task sequence, all tasks in a sequence are applied to all the selected files.

The batch task sequences which are performed on multiple files, always process those files in alphabetical order no matter the user sorting method. This ensures consistent results.

TaskDescription
Analyze Files The task analyzes source files against the main translation memory (TM), producing statistics on the leverage to be expected during translation. The Analyze Files task:
  • Works with project TMs if it they are available
  • Generates the Analyze Files report
Trados Studio performs this task by default when a project is created as part of the Prepare, Analyze Only and Prepare without project TM task sequences. It is also part of the Analyze Only and Prepare without project TM task sequences.

You can run this task as part of the task sequence or by itself at any time during the project lifetime.

By default, the Analyze Files task always runs after the Pre-translate Files task. This is to avoid reporting incorrect locked-segments results.

Make sure that you also run the Analyze Files task after the Pre-translate Files task for all your custom task sequences.

Apply PerfectMatchIf you have closely related files that have been translated previously, for example previous versions of the same file, and you have the *.sdlxliff files that were produced at that time, PerfectMatch can extract translations from the *.sdlxliff files and apply them to the new project files. This task also generates the Apply PerfectMatch report.
Create Regulator Review Bundle If you work in a Regulated Industry and have purchased a license containing this feature, you can send a bundle of files to an external regulator for review. A bundle is a *.zip file that contains a specific collection of files needed by the regulator. The reviewed target file from the bundle can then be imported back into Trados Studio using the Update from External Review task and the *.sdlxliff updated with edits, tracked changes, reviewed statuses and comments.
Export files Exports the selected files to a folder of your choice (outside the current project folder). By default, the files are exported in the file format in which they were originally created. However, you can also export them as bilingual *.sdlxliff files or in whatever their format is currently.

This is useful if you want to send the files for review to someone who is not using Trados Studio, while keeping the project files in their current state (in *.sdlxliff format). Settings for this are specified on the Batch Processing > Export Files page.

Export for Bilingual Review For reviewers who do not have Trados Studio installed, you can export the *.sdlxliff file to a bilingual *.docx format which can be opened in Microsoft Word. The reviewed file can then be imported back into Trados Studio, using the Update from Bilingual Review task and the *.sdlxliff updated with tracked changes, reviewed statuses and comments.
FinalizeFinalize is a batch task sequence which would typically be performed after translation and review. The following tasks are part of this sequence:
  • Update Main Translation Memories , which updates the main TM with approved translations.
  • Generate Target Translations, which generates the translated versions of each of the original source files.
Generate Target Translations This task generates a translated version of the original file which was submitted for translation. For example, if the original file submitted for translation was a Word file, a translated Word file is produced.

The translation text is taken from the target language *.sdlxliff file. The location to which the translated file will be generated defaults to the same location where your source and bilingual files are saved in your project.

Populate Project Translation MemoriesThis task creates a project translation memory (TM) for each target language (if one does not currently exist) and updates the project TM with translations. A project TM contains translations taken from the TMs selected for a project.

This task is performed as part of the Prepare task sequence when a project is created. You can also run this task at any time during the project lifetime.

Pre-translate Files

Pre-translates project files by applying translations from TMs, termbases (TBs) and previously translated files.

Pre-translation refers to the automatic translation of segments in the source files. This task also generates the Pre-translate Files report.

The Pre-translate Files task always runs before the Analyze Files task. This is to avoid reporting incorrect locked-segments results. Make sure that you also run the Pre-translate Files before the Analyze Files task for all your custom task sequences.

Automated Translation during pre-translation

The Pre-translate Files batch task automatically enables the Apply Automated Translation if you have a Machine Translation provider enabled for your project. This helps you leverage more content during pre-translation, but may affect your Machine Translation quotas.

Automated Translation during pre-translation is disabled when your active Machine Translation provider is a cloud translation engine. In this case, Studio continues to leave target segments empty during pre-translation. If you want pre-translate using cloud translation engines, enable the engine during project creation instead.

To disable automated translation during pre-translation, go to Project Settings > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > [your language pair] > Batch Processing > Pre-translate Files and disable Apply automated translation under When no match is found. To disable this option for all future projects, change this setting under All Language Pairs instead.

(Beta) GroupShare Analyze and TranslateIf you have a server-based TM added to your project from a Trados GroupShare 2017 CU09 or later server, you can use this batch task to analyze source files against the server-based TM and apply the translation based on your settings.
Pseudo-translate This task sequence simulates translation on files to see how the translated files will look after translation and how much extra engineering work will be required before actual translation is done. Performing this as an individual task only shows you how the target translations will look in the bilingual *.sdlxliff file. If you want to see how it will be displayed in the final generated file, perform the Pseudo-translate Round Trip sequence.
Translation CountThis task generates the Translation Count report which provides details about the status of the translations in your project. For example, the status of a translation may be Translated or Translation Approved.
Translation Quality Assessment This task generates the Translation Quality Assessment report and analyzes the translation quality assessment (TQA) items available in the selected files for the selected languages. The report shows whether the translation file passed the TQA check.
Update from Bilingual Review If you sent your files for external review using the Export for Bilingual Review batch task or the Create Regulator Review Bundle batch task, you can import the content of the following reviewed files back into:
  • Bilingual review files (*.review.docx)
  • Target review files (*.target.docx)
This import updates the target segments in the *.sdlxliff project file with any edits, tracked changes, reviewed statuses and comments.
Update from Reviewed Target File (Retrofit) If an external reviewer performs changes to a file you previously exported using the Export Files batch task with the Target version option, you can import those changes back to your Trados Studio project with this option.

After the changes are imported, you can review the updates in the Editor view using tracked changes. Optionally, you can also check and correct the retrofit results in Alignment view before opening them in the Editor.

Update Main Translation Memories This task updates all of the main translation memories (TMs) with translations from the active project or from the active file. By default, any translations that have a status of Translated, Translation Approved and Signed Off are updated to the TM. When a translation unit is updated, the custom fields values specified in the TM update settings are automatically assigned to the new translations. This task also generates the Update Main Translation Memories report which displays the results of the update.
Update Project Translation Memories This task updates the project TMs with translations from the active project or from the active file. By default, any translations that have a status of Translated, Translation Approved and Signed Off are updated to the TM. When a translation unit is updated, the custom fields values specified in the TM update settings are automatically assigned to the new translations. This task also generates the Update Project Translation Memories report which displays the results of the update.
Verify FilesThis task runs selected verification checks on files, and generates the Verify Files report.
Word Count This task counts the total number of words, characters, segments and placeables in one or more files. This task also generates the Word Count report.

For a detailed analysis of how Trados Studio calculates the number of words in a file, see the So how many words do you think it is? blog article.

WIP ReportThis task generates the Work in Progress (WIP) report to track the status of the project. The report contains data on what work has been done for each confirmation level and what work is required going forward.
