Configuring Text file types

Configure Text file type settings to customize the way text files with one paragraph per line. are processed during translation or review.

Procedure

  1. To configure file type settings, go to:
    • Projects view > Home > Project Settings, for the active project.
    • File > Options, for all future projects.
  2. Expand File Types and select Text.
  3. On the Document structure page, provide regular expressions that define the structure of the file. Specify regular expression patterns to define the start and end points of translatable text:
    • Opening pattern - identifies the start of translatable text.
    • Closing pattern- identifies the end of translatable text.
    • Multiline - marks the specified pattern as covering multiple lines.
  4. On the Inline tags page, set the rules that specify the text that the software will convert to inline tags. Click Add rule to add new rule.
    • Rule type - the type of the inline rule, Tag pair or Placeholder.
    • Opening - string of text that marks the beginning of the rule.
    • Closing - string of text that marks the end of the rule.
    • Ignore case - does not take capitalization into account.
    • Translate - specifies if the rule is translatable.
    • Multiline - marks the specified pattern as covering multiple lines.
  5. On the Common page, set the rules that specify the text that Trados Studio will convert to inline tags. Click Add rule to add new rule.
    • Configure how Line breaks in translatable text are handled. This setting only has effect if you specify a multiline pattern for translatable text.
      • Remove Line Breaks - removes line breaks and displays paragraphs inline.
      • Replace Line Breaks with inline tag - keeps line breaks and displays them as inline tags in the Editor.
      • Keep Line Breaks - keeps line breaks but does not display them as inline tags in the Editor.
    • Display warnings for improperly paired tags - displays a warning notification if improperly paired tags are found.
    • Choose when to add Unicode UTF-8 byte order mark (BOM) in the target file:
      • Preserve; don't add if not originally present - does not add byte order mark if the source file is encoded with UTF-8 without BOM.
      • Preserve; add if not originally present - adds byte order mark if the source file is encoded with UTF-8 without BOM.
      • Remove if present - removes byte order mark if the source file is encoded with UTF-8 with BOM.
    • Encoding - tells Trados Studio how to interpret numbers and characters in the file.
      • Detect as UTF-8 if the byte order mark (BOM) is missing - enforces UTF-8 detection if the file does not have a BOM.
  6. On the QuickInsert page, customize the QuickInsert settings for the QuickInsert group for this type of file.
  7. Click OK to close the window.
