Displaying sort-order tags correctly in Adobe FrameMaker

Square brackets are sort-order tags which are used for sorting in FrameMaker.

About this task

To use the square brackets as tags, you must first add the square brackets in the QuickInsert group. To add the extra tags to the QuickInsert, see the Adding custom QuickInsert buttons - quotes example topic.

Inserting [] directly will not work, since these brackets will be escaped to \[\] in the MIF file and will not be used for the correct sorting of the index entry.

When translating a Adobe FrameMaker document (*.mif.sdlxliff) from any source language to the target language Japanese in Trados Studio, the Japanese sort order tags are visible and displayed as plain text in the index entry.

Be aware of the following procedure when adding sort-order tags to index entries which can be recognized by the code " IE " in the Document Structure Information column.

Procedure

  1. Place the cursor at the end of the translated index entry.
  2. From the QuickInsert group of the Home tab, select the Command > Apply sort order to index entry.
  3. Enter the required kana characters between the [so></so] tags.
  4. If a separator between primary and secondary index entry is required, copy the tag<text value=":"/>
Index entries in the generated target MIF translation document are displaying correctly now.
