Editing the Currency formats

When segmenting text and auto-substituting placeables, Trados Studio uses a default list of currency formats (symbol and symbol placement) for each source and target language. This list ensures that the currency formats of the source language are recognized and localized correctly in the target language.

About this task

The Currency list is stored in the language resources of your translation memory (TM). To customize the patterns that are identified as currency amounts and the way that they are localized into the target language, edit the default language resource of your TM.

You can edit the language resource for an existing TM in the Translation Memories view. Alternatively, you can also create a language resource template with a custom Currency list that you can then apply to all future project TMs.

Procedure

  1. Identify the TM or the language resource template for which you want to customize the formats:
    • to update formats for a local or server-based TM: in the Translation Memories folder, right-click your TM and select Settings > Language Resources.
    • to update formats for a language resource template: in the Language Resource Templates folder, right-click the template and select Settings.
  2. In the table, identify the language for which you want to customize the currency formats:
    • edit formats for the source language to change the patterns that Trados Studio identifies as currency amounts. For example,"15 USD" may not be recognized as a currency amount, but as a numbered followed by a word.
    • edit the formats for the target language to mirror the recognition patterns specified for currency in the source language. This ensures that Trados Studio identifies the unit as a currency amount in both the source and target text. As a result, it will not trigger unnecessary TM matching penalties. For example, if you add "USD" as a measurement unit for the source language, make sure to add it to the target language as well, to ensure a 1:1 correspondence.
  3. Click in the Currency cell and edit an existing format or add a new one. You can search for existing currency units by typing them in the box, and trying to add them to the list. If an error tooltip is displayed, the unit is already available in the list.
  4. Click OK to close the Currency Formats dialog box.
  5. To also customize the format of the number in the currency amount, click in the Numbers cell. Edit the thousand and decimal separators and press Enter.
  6. Use the Move up Move up and Move downMove down arrows in the first column to prioritize the order of the custom currency formats. The first long and short formats in the list are used by default for QuickPlace and Automatic Translation suggestions (unless you choose another format under Auto-substitution > Numbers and currency). For TM matches, Trados Studio uses the same format as in the TM match to show you examples of how currency formats have been localized in previous translations. You can make TM matches always use the same format, by disabling the option For TM matches, copy the TM format under Auto-substitution > Numbers and currency > Separators for currency.
  7. Click OK to close the Number Formats dialog box.
  8. Enable your new custom formats for auto-substitution. Otherwise, Trados Studio will continue localizing placeables using the same format as in the TM target match. If no TM matches are available for a segment, Trados Studio will use the default localization formats for the target language.
  9. Make sure your preferred custom formats are enabled under Project Settings window > [Your language pair] > Translation Memory and Automated Translation > Auto-substitutionDates and Times and Numbers and Currency.
  10. Specify the placement of the currency symbol.
  11. Click OK to close the Project Settings window and save your settings.
