Editing the Variables list

When identifying untranslatable content and segmenting text, Trados Studio uses variables list for each language. For example, you could add a product name to this list and it will be kept as is from the source text to the target text.

About this task

The Variables list is stored in the language resources of your translation memory (TM). To add your own variables to the list, edit the default language resource of your TM.

You can edit the language resource for an existing TM in the Translation Memories view. Alternatively, you can also create a language resource template with a custom Variable list that you can then apply to all future project TMs.

Procedure

  1. Go to the Translation Memories view.
  2. Identify the TM or the language resource template for which you want to customize the Variables list.
    • to make changes to a TM, expand Translation Memories, right-click the TM and select Settings > Language Resources.
    • to make changes to a language resource template, expand the Language Resource Template, right-click the TM and select Settings.
  3. In the table, identify the language for which you want to customize the variables. Identify the Variable List column and click in the appropriate language cell.
  4. In the Variables dialog, double click-an existing item to edit it, or add your own variables:
    • to add items one-by-one, type the variable text and click . Add as many items as needed and click OK.
    • to bulk transfer an existing list of variables, click Import. Make sure your import file is a .TXT file, with one variable per line. Trados Studio removes any duplicate entries in the import file. Items that already exist in the language resource list will be removed.
  5. Select OK to close the Variables dialog.
Trados Studio saves your new variables and arranges the list alphabetically.
