If source editing is enabled, you can specify if segment merge is permitted across paragraphs, at project level. This can be changed during project creation or during the project lifecycle for an existing project.
Procedure
- Go to the Home tab, and then select Project Settings.
- In the Project Settings dialog, in the navigation tree, select Project.
- Select the Allow source editing checkbox, if available.
Note: The option may be unavailable in some scenarios.
- Do one of the following:
- To enable segment merge across paragraphs, select the Enable merging segments across paragraphs checkbox.
- To disable segment merge across paragraphs, clear the Disable merging segments across paragraphs checkbox. This is the default value.
- Select OK to close the Project Settings dialog and save your changes.
- You can customize the behavior of the merged segments by going to from the Ribbon and selecting from the navigation tree.

Results
Segment merge is now enabled or disabled, depending on your choice.
Note: If the first segment from the ones you are merging is entirely formatted in a certain way, that formatting is applied to the whole merged segment for both the source and the target. For example, if the first segment you are merging is a heading with italic text, all the subsequent paragraph segments you are merging it to will also be an italic heading even though they had no formatting applied prior to merging. This is a limitation that will be addressed in future releases.
