Exporting TM data

You can export data from your translation memories (TMs) to a *.tmx (Translation Memory Exchange) file. *.tmx files contain translation units (TUs) and their associated fields.

About this task

The export feature allows you to export some or all of the contents of a TM to a *.tmx or *.tmx.gz file. You may want to export in order to:

  • Exchange TM data with third-parties or between different players in the translation supply chain who may use different product versions. For example, you may want to export data to a*.tmx format that can be used in Trados 2007.
  • Create a secure backup of you TM data. RWS recommends that you perform weekly exports to back up the data from your TM.
  • Repair or re-index TMs.
  • Reverse the TM source and target languages.

Data is exported from the TM in the form of a *.tmx or a *. tmx.gz (compressed *.tmx) file. When exporting TM data you are exporting TUs with their associated fields.

Procedure

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Go to the Translation Memory view, and in the navigation tree, select the TM whose contents you want to export.
    • Go to the Translation Memory view. If the TM does not appear in the navigation tree, select File > Open > Open Translation Memory.
  2. Go to the Home tab and select Export.
  3. In the Export wizard, on the Export Options page, specify the name and the location of the *.tmx file you want to export to:
    1. Select Browse. In the Select Export File dialog, browse to the location where you want the export file to be created, specify a name for the file and select Save.
    2. If you want to limit the export to a particular set of TUs, select Edit. In the Filter dialog, create a filter that will select the TUs to be exported. Select OK when finished. Only TUs that match the filter will be exported.
    3. Select Export to Workbench-optimized TMX format for use in Trados 2007 to import the *.tmx file into a TM in SDL Trados 2007 Translator's Workbench. This format ensures that text fields and attributes in the *.tmx file can be correctly imported into Workbench.
  4. Select Next to start the export process.
  5. On the Exporting page, the TUs exported from a TM to a *.tmx file are displayed as statistics:

    Close

Select this option when the export is complete to close the Export wizard.

  6. When the export has finished, the items on this page are listed as Complete. Select Finish.
The exported data is now available as a *.tmx file in the location you specified.
